WrestleMania 29 saw WWE return to the New York metro area, in a symbolic revisiting of the company’s roots as the New York territory, including a Hall of Fame induction ceremony that emanated from Madison Square Garden, for which the WWE history included hosting WrestleManias 1, 10, and 20.

While this wasn’t necessarily as star-studded or as historically important of a WrestleMania as those predecessors, it nonetheless offered a memorable night of WWE action. This article takes a look back at the show’s best and worst moments.

Best Moment: John Cena learned his lesson

John Cena had learned lessons from his match with The Rock.

While the dream match between The Rock and John Cena didn’t exactly dazzle hardcore fans its first time through the year before, it was nonetheless a matchup with major marquee value to justify WWE revisiting the theme.

One of the more fun elements of the second go-round of Cena challenging The Rock was that it continued the existing story, most notably in the closing moments of the match.

WrestleMania 28 saw Cena get too cocky and go for a Five Knuckle Shuffle only to run straight into a Rock Bottom that cost him the match.

At WrestleMania 29, a similar sequence played out, only Cena held onto the ropes to keep from getting caught by The Great One, ultimately leading to Cena capturing the pin moments later.

As such, fans who’d watched carefully the year before got their pay off, and WWE convincingly told the story of Cena upping his game to overcome his rival on his second try.

Worst Moment: Mark Henry pins Ryback

Mark Henry beating Ryback deflated the crowd.

The match between Ryback and Mark Henry looked to be a fun enough spectacle, pitting two of the most powerful Superstars on the WWE roster against one another.

No one expected a five-star classic, but a smash mouth contest with a fun feat of strength or two seemed to be in order, en route to buddying main event star Ryback picking up a signature victory.

Except Mark Henry won instead.

Henry won when Ryback wasn’t quite strong enough to hit his Shell Shock finisher, allowing Henry to pick up the pin after The Big Guy collapsed beneath the weight of The World’s Strongest Man.

The outcome was deflating both to the fans and to Ryback’s larger momentum. That Ryback did hit Shell Shock after the match rang awfully hollow—he’d already missed out on his WrestleMania moment of hitting the move during the match to pick up the victory, and the post-match altercation reeked of WWE trying to have its cake and eat it too.
