Is the WWE reviving The Great American Bash?

What's the story?

Mike Johnson of PWInsider is reporting that the WWE has filed a trademark for an old WCW staple, and past WWE pay per view, The Great American Bash. This trademark was filed on April 27th.

In case you didn't know...

The Great American Bash was the creation of Dusty Rhodes to help promote tours for Jim Crockett Promotions during the summer. They would originally be specials televised on TBS before becoming a pay per view in 1988.

The heart of the matter...

At the time of this writing, it is unknown what the plan is for The Great American Bash, but the WWE revived the brand in 2004, four years after the event's last appearance in WCW.

The Great American Bash would be a pay per view for the WWE from 2004 until 2008. In 2009, it was renamed simply "The Bash." The moniker returned in 2012 for a special edition of SmackDown Live the day before Independence Day.

The very first Great American Bash in 1985 had the main event of Rhodes and Tully Blanchard for the NWA World Television Championship inside a steel cage.

What's next?

WWE Backlash is the next event for the WWE when it takes place from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

It'll be the first co-branded pay per view under the current brand split with the main event of AJ Styles v. Shinsuke Nakamura for the WWE Championship in a no disqualification match.

Author's take...

I wonder if they are going to revive The Great American Bash for a special WWE Live event similar to what they did with Starrcade last November in North Carolina.

With the WWE airing the Greatest Royal Rumble live on the WWE Network, maybe this opens the door for a 4th of July special with The Great American Bash moniker.
