The result of the 2013 Royal Rumble was never in doubt – The PPV was used to set up the Rock vs John Cena II main event for the ensuing Wrestlemania and both wrestlers had to win their respective matches to gather momentum for their showdown.

The Rock was going to wrestle in a WWE Championship match for the first time in a decade against the champion CM Punk and the company wasn’t going to let the Hollywood superstar lose before ‘Mania.

Consequently, Cena would have to win the Rumble match to challenge the Rock once he became the WWE Champion.

Thus Cena winning the Rumble was a foregone conclusion and he did so emphatically, last eliminating the then-relevant Ryback. Cena would challenge the new WWE Champion Rock at ‘Mania and beat him to win the title and tie their head to head score 1-1.
