Top 5 opponents for John Cena at WrestleMania 31

Hate him or love him, John Cena is one name without which the WWE wouldn’t be complete. Missing him for a pay-per-view like WrestleMania would be like not having clowns in a child’s birthday party.Last year, Cena took a big step down when he battled Bray Wyatt in the midcard of the pay-per-view. This is that same man who has been a mainstay in the shop stopping scene for more than a decade and settling for midcard pegging was clearly a back step for the Cenation leader. Now, bothering about the past would be a waste of time, so let’s start thinking about what Cena could do in the next WrestleMania. Here is a look at five names that could face Cena at WrestleMania 31.

#1 Undertaker

The chances of Undertaker having another match are actually very slim. His health hasn’t been in the best condition after his showdown with Brock Lesnar. However, the fans and the company would love to give him a proper farewell.

Taker has had numerous opponents at the WrestleMania stage and Cena was always illusive from that list. Facing Taker at the grand stage of them all is also one thing that Cena hasn’t achieved.

These two situations would make this an ideal farewell match for the Phenom. Cena would be able to carry Taker through the match and won’t cause the amount of damage that Lesnar caused.

A win for Taker would make everyone a winner in the end and a Cena – Taker match would always draw crowds no matter where it happens.

#2 Rusev

On the surface, this might look like another version of Bray Wyatt – John Cena match but it could be much more if the company would give Rusev a win.

The only thing that went bad at last year’s WrestleMania was Cena getting a win over Bray. The match told the story of Bray being the monster but once Cena won, the feud was pretty much dead.

Now, Rusev has been protected big time by the company, more than what they did for Bray during his initial run. He is slowly breaking out of expectations and making a main event career which will need a block buster match at WrestleMania.

Cena will have no problem putting over Rusev at the pay-per-view but the company should make sure that the Bulgarian Brute walks out with a win.

#3 Dean Ambrose

This would be the ultimate showdown between the hero and the anti-hero. WWE had a chance to bank in this feud before Hell in a Cell but did the right decision by saving it for a much bigger stage.

From the teaser that we got last month, the two is sure to have a great buildup to the actual match. Projecting Cena as a bad guy was incredibly hard with Bray as his opponent, Ambrose on the other hand offers that option.

The rebellious Ambrose will most likely eliminate the 50-50 response by pulling the entire crowd into his favor. It will be like choosing between Steve Austin and Rock but the fans that are fed up with the PG product will clearly choose Ambrose and the unpredictability that he brings to the table.

#4 Roman Reigns

We’ve seen Rock vs. Hulk Hogan and we’ve seen Cena vs. Rock, if WWE wants to build Roman Reigns as the face of the company, then they have to book him in a torch passing match like this.

Cena has been reigning as the face of the company for nearly one and a half decades. The 50-50 reaction he gets from the crowd and the physical condition that he is in make it clear as day that Cena’s career is at its twilight.

Building up a new star to fill in those boots is a necessity and Reigns has shown that he could get the job done. A match between the two would not be any technical marvel but it will have the flashiness to keep the fans on their seat.

#5 Triple H

Triple H and John Cena have had numerous matches in the past and every time they went in between those ropes, the fans were sure to be treated at the highest possible level.

WWE is currently using the evergreen chemistry between the two to have a Survivor Series traditional match but as far as we know, Hunter is not going to work at the pay-per-view.

The company also doesn’t have plans for making Cena the WWE champion anytime soon making Hunter the best opponent for Cena at WrestleMania.

The power struggle angle between Vince McMahon and Triple H could run all the way to WrestleMania with Cena being McMahon’s representative. Rock is supposed to be McMahon’s pick according to internet rumors but we all know that it’s a long shot to be dreaming about the Brahma Bull.
