Top 5 ultimate babyfaces in WWE history

Jeff Hardy after winning a match in TNA

CaptionMany WWE Superstars are known as either a heel or babyface. Some play both roles well while others are good at one specific one. It has been amazing to see how some never turn while others turn every other weekend.People like Kane and Big Show might turn every few months yet someone like Kofi Kingston only now has turned in his WWE career. So really, it comes down to what works best and what sells. WWE and other companies realize that heel and babyfaces are needed to tell a really good story most of the time. While heels seem to have more fun, it is the good guy that gets the win at the end of the rivalry on a normal basis. On top of this, kids love them and more money is made through the good guy. We decided to count down the top five ultimate good guys in WWE history. While some did spend some time as heels, their career will always be known for their role as a good guy.

#1 Jeff Hardy

Jeff Hardy after winning a match in TNA

No one in the history of WWE has ever been more over than Jeff Hardy after continuously screwing up. Hardy was always a fan favorite who seemed to get massive ovations every single place he went.

Sadly, Hardy’s entire career has always been linked to drugs. He has been suspended and fined by WWE due to this. He even left at a few points in his career because it seemed he was more into using than being clean, which he knew he couldn’t do in WWE.

He would go on to TNA where he was known to have used. One of the most infamous was at Victory Road a number of years ago where he was in the main event against Sting for the TNA World Title. Jeff was messed up bad and the match ended very quick.

Despite this, fans have still loved him. No one truly seems to know why a man like Hardy continues to get the support of the fans, but the fact is that it seems nothing he can do will ever get people to really hate him.

In WWE, he never truly worked as a heel. At one point, there was an attempt but it simply didn’t work and the program ended abruptly. His brother Matt Hardy has played the bad guy role well, but Jeff never really could.

TNA turned him for a period of time, and it worked for the most part. However, Hardy’s mic skills always lacked behind. So he never was truly able to get fans to hate him. After the Immortal story ended, Hardy turned face and TNA hasn’t tried to turn him since. WWE never wanted to do so, because they knew Hardy was always going to be loved. That said, he may always be seen as an ultimate babyface.

#2 Rey Mysterio

Rey Mysterio prays before a match

Few men in WWE history have ever been able to work as a babyface without fans wanting to see them change. Rey Mysterio is a big exception to this.

Fans have loved Rey for years. The love was potentially due to his Lucha libre wrestling style. Fans love this style, but in America, it is quite rare to see the Lucha workers in a major company get over as big as Rey did.

Much less can they work as heels it seems. While Lucha Underground has changed this up, WCW and WWE seemed to only be able to turn people in these styles when they had multiple people working the style.

Rey got over so quick in his WWE run that WWE used him to connect to the Hispanic audience often while Eddie Guerrero worked as a heel a large portion of his career. Mysterio became the ultimate babyface when Eddie passed away.

Not only did fans want to love Rey more than ever, but WWE knew that the market needed Rey and that he would be massive for them. He was just that for his entire WWE career. Rey never once worked heel in WWE, which is a rarity for people who worked with the company as long as Rey.

#3 Bruno Sammartino

Bruno Sammartino with Triple H

Bruno Sammartino is known for being one of the top WWE Superstars in history and the longest reigning WWE Champion ever.

At one point, many felt that he would not be liked due to his family background. He was of Italian origin, and although Italians weren’t hated in the Northeast, there was some doubt when WWE was planning to go major if Bruno could connect. Not only did he, but he was able to become even bigger.

He had the body Vince McMahon seemed to want every top wrestler to have. Bruno was the true first top guy, and he helped Vince McMahon, Jr. become the leader in pro-wrestling.

From 1963 to 1981, Bruno was WWE’s top man. He was originally the pick for top guy by Vince McMahon, Sr. who owned the WWWF at the time. When Vince, Jr. took over, Bruno still remained but was headed out.

Eventually, he was replaced by Hogan. Bruno would say that he hated where wrestling went as he felt the adult material was wrong and never seemed to watch after he left.

When he was active, no man was bigger. Bruno noted that he had no idea that people would know him today, so when he was announced in Atlanta for the WWE Hall of Fame, he was surprised at the reaction from fans.

Bruno has never seemed to work as a bad guy because he is too easy to like. He has helped many and was always a nice guy who fans couldn’t seem to find hatred for. If you ask your grandfather about his favorite wrestler, he will probably end up saying Bruno, like so many do. That is power.

#4 Hulk Hogan

Hulk Hogan on WWE RAW

WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan was known as the ultimate babyface. WWE marketed him like crazy as the good guy who you just had to love.

He told kids to say their prayers and eat their vitamins on a regular basis. He also seemed to always connect with the fans. It made total sense for him to continue to be the good guy for as long as possible. One day, Vince decided that he wanted to go on a youth movement. So people like Hogan and Randy Savage ended up on the back burner for others.

Hogan wanted to seemingly retire at the time and may have stayed there if not for Eric Bischoff. He would bring Hogan in, but the interesting thing is that times changed from the time Hogan was in WWE to the new breed of fans that were starting to come up, especially in places like WCW.

Hogan would be Hogan in WCW, but fans hated it. They wanted something new. They ended up booing Hogan, which led to a big opportunity. Bischoff wanted to turn Hogan heel. Not only did it shock the world, but it changed pro-wrestling.

When he came back to WWE in 2002, he did so as an NWO member with Kevin Nash and Scott Hall. They were bad guys, like the NWO always seemed to be. Fans seemed to dislike this, sort of like how WCW fans hated the babyface Hogan.

This led to WWE changing Hogan back to babyface.

While Hogan played bad well, he seemed to lose this in WWE. The fans with WWE wanted the Hogan they grew up loving. This led to the ultimate babyface returning. From then on, Hogan has remained a babyface when with WWE. He was heel for only a brief time with WWE and it didn’t work, so there is no doubt WWE will never turn him again if he does end up returning.

#5 John Cena

John Cena at WrestleMania 30

John Cena has been at the top of WWE for over a decade now. While Cena got over big time as a heel rapper, he ended up turning babyface and remained there since.

Fans wanted to see the babyface turn years ago when the rap gimmick got over so well. Eventually, WWE gave the fans what they wanted and Cena became the next big deal for the company. They needed him to be as well, as they put so much stock in Brock Lesnar only for him to want to leave 2 years into his WWE career.

While people like The Undertaker, Kurt Angle, and Triple H were all still active at the time Cena came up....there was a need to build a need top guy. WWE did so with people like Randy Orton as well, but no one connected like Cena did.

Cena began to get over well, but too much of him on WWE programming and multiple wins that made no sense started to annoy fans. This is why many people hate Cena, on top of the people who still love him.

Truly, Cena is a good guy. He is great for WWE and helps in every charity he is asked. He has granted more wishes for the Make-A-Wish Foundation than any other person, which is big for John. He never turns down an autograph it seems and is always willing to talk with fans.

He truly is the ultimate good guy. While fans still want to see a heel turn for Cena eventually, we all know that Cena will always go down for his career as a good guy. He simoly cannot escape the good he has done.
