WrestleMania 34: Ranking each WrestleMania match by its potential quality

WrestleMania 34 poster.
Which match will shine brightest?

13 matches have been booked for WrestleMania 34, and it's going to be a long show, but the card looks like one of the best in recent memory in the WWE.

That's not to say that every match is a potential show-stealer, though. Some will certainly be better than others. Every WrestleMania has certain matches that act as buffers between the better-quality showings.

Which matches have the lowest floors and highest ceilings?

#14 Alexa Bliss vs. Nia Jax (Raw Women's Championship)

WWE has done a very good job building up this match, which few would want to see otherwise. They'll need to pull out all the smoke and mirrors though, as neither Bliss or Jax are known for their ring work. It's therefore imperative to keep it a short, satisfying squash.

If it goes on much longer than five minutes, it's guaranteed to become famous for all the wrong reasons.

#13 Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal

youtube-cover

Battle royals can be fun, but WWE has proven that the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal is only a way to eat time and get everyone on the card. It will probably be on the two-hour pre-show.

With little reason to care about who wins (since nothing is on the line) or room to put on a great wrestling match, it will just be a glorified brawl.

That's not to say it won't be entertaining. It just doesn't compare well with the rest of the stacked card.

#12 WrestleMania Women's Battle Royal

youtube-cover

The former Fabulous Moolah battle royal, this will be exactly the equivalent of its men's counterpart. That's to say, it won't mean anything to whoever wins it.

It will probably be better than the Andre version this year, though, because of the novelty, the lower amount of entrants, and the prospect of seeing some NXT favourites, like Kairi Sane, involved in the contest.

#11 Kurt Angle and Ronda Rousey vs. Triple H and Stephanie McMahon

youtube-cover

This match is riding solely on the curiosity and novelty that comes with Ronda Rousey's first match. Unfortunately, Rousey hasn't exactly set the world on fire in her appearances so far.

The other three parts of this match are dicey. Stephanie McMahon isn't a wrestler, so she can't be relied on. Kurt Angle and Triple H are going to have to carry it, but that comes with problems too, since the former didn't look so good at Survivor Series and the latter isn't well-known for his great WrestleMania matches of late.

It will all be about building to Ronda tapping Stephanie out in the armbar, but truth be told, that isn't as exciting as WWE thinks it is. Hopefully, they keep this match to 10 or so minutes, with a clear focus on that build.

#10 Randy Orton vs. Bobby Roode vs. Jinder Mahal vs. Rusev (United States Championship)

youtube-cover

This match got a major shot in the arm with the addition of Rusev. Without him, it would probably be ranked even lower than where it is. The crowd now has someone to cheer for. It's also nice to see Rusev getting at least a bit of recognition for how tremendously over he is.

His addition turns up the ring quality too, as all three other competitors haven't been on hot streaks heading into WrestleMania, where Rusev had a quite good match with Shinsuke Nakamura at Fastlane.

#9 Cesaro and Sheamus vs. Braun Strowman and surprise partner

youtube-cover

This won't be a work rate classic. Rather, it will be about the fun of seeing who Braun Strowman's partner is and what crazy stunt the Monster Among Men pulls at WrestleMania 34 (he's certain to do something grandiose).

It will likely be an enjoyable, stunt-filled cool-down match between some of the longer, work rate centered ones.

#8 Cedric Alexander vs. Mustafa Ali (Cruiserweight Championship)

youtube-cover

This should be a fantastically worked match between two great professional wrestlers. Its ceiling is very high and it could well punch far above its weight.

Unfortunately, 205 Live still has a long way to go when it comes to getting fans invested, even if it has been on a roll lately.

Likely relegated to the pre-show, the match is set to entertain, but probably won't really grab hold of an audience like some of the other matches on the better half of the WrestleMania card.

#7 John Cena vs. The Undertaker

youtube-cover

The only match that is still unannounced but which we all know is coming, it has the most chatter surrounding it, true. Ranking it even this high is being generous, though. Sure, there will be a huge buzz in seeing Cena and Undertaker sharing the ring on the grandest stage, but the match is riding on name recognition alone.

Cena's first promo calling out the Undertaker was well-done, but the subsequent ones have dragged. Undertaker's not being there has hurt the build.

The Undertaker's age has also caught up with him, so the match itself isn't going to be worked nearly as well as many others on the card, despite how electric the crowd is likely to be, seeing them together.

#6 The Miz vs. Seth Rollins vs. Finn Balor (Intercontinental Championship)

youtube-cover

Seth Rollins has been on a roll since returning to singles competition; Finn Balor remains one of the most popular superstars on Raw despite his booking; The Miz can keep anything interesting; all three can go in the ring.

There's no element to this match that's bad, and if it's given the right time, it could be the sleeper hit of the entire show.

#5 Daniel Bryan and Shane McMahon vs. Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn

youtube-cover

This match would have been ranked far lower, but the return of Daniel Bryan gives it a shot of adrenaline that will take it to the moon.

When he gets that hot tag, and takes the fight to Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn, New Orleans is going to explode. It will be by far the loudest the crowd will be all night.

Owens and Zayn are both solid workers, and we can always rely on Shane McMahon to do a crazy stunt at WrestleMania, assuming he's cleared from his recent diverticulitis scare.

#4 Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns (Universal Championship)

youtube-cover

This match mostly depends on what Brock Lesnar wants to do. If he's motivated, it could be the match of the night. If he decides otherwise, it will be far below what it could be.

If the match is anything like their WrestleMania 31 encounter, we're in for an enjoyable brawl, which the past couple of weeks of build has emphasized.

Unfortunately, it will have an ending that few will be enthusiastic about, which will be a drag, regardless of what Lesnar's mood is.

#3 Asuka vs. Charlotte Flair (SmackDown Women's Championship)

youtube-cover

For the first time in a while, there's a women's singles match at a WrestleMania with a big fight feel. Charlotte Flair, the cornerstone of the "women's revolution," will take on Asuka, who hasn't been pinned or submitted in two and a half years. It will be a first-time-ever meeting to boot.

In addition, Charlotte always steps up her game on bigger stages, and it seems impossible for Asuka to have a match that's anything less than good (unless it happens to be with Alexa Bliss).

Unless for some reason their styles don't mesh well, there's no reason why this match shouldn't be spectacular, and a monumental milestone in women's wrestling.

The biggest doubt comes in the form of Carmella, who could totally ruin it by cashing in mid-match. Let's hope that doesn't happen.

#2 The Usos vs. The New Day vs. The Bludgeon Brothers (SmackDown Tag Team Championship)

youtube-cover

The Usos and The New Day had one of WWE's best rivalries last year. Time after time, they put on show-stealing matches, and were for a long run the sole bright spot on SmackDown. Now they have the chance to do it again, as they deserve, at WrestleMania.

The Bludgeon Brothers will be joining them this time, though. They've been built up impeccably, and have already shown both teams that they're not to be trifled with.

Each competitor in the match is a good worker, so the match should be electric regardless of anything else. It already has quite possibly the highest ceiling of all right now.

However, if that TLC rumor ends up coming true, expect the ceiling to go up still further.

WrestleMania has a long history of car-crash ladder matches, and this could well be one of the best ever.

#1 AJ Styles vs. Shinsuke Nakamura (WWE Championship)

youtube-cover

The build hasn't been good so far, but this encounter is far more about the match than the build. Since their arrival in WWE, hot off the heels of their Wrestle Kingdom 10 classic, fans have been wanting an encore, and they'll get it on the grandest stage of them all.

Of all the matches on the card, this has the best chance of delivering a legendary wrestling contest that fans won't soon forget. AJ Styles truly is phenomenal in the squared circle, and Shinsuke Nakamura is likely to be as motivated as he'll ever be in this, the undisputed biggest match of his (and Styles') career.

With Styles' injury scare seemingly behind us, the only dark cloud is gone.

If it gets the time and placement it deserves, it would probably have to be really bad for it to not be the best match of the night.
