10 Funniest backstage insults in WWE history

The Rock has been responsible for some of the funniest backstage segments

If pulled off right, backstage segments can do wonders. This was the motto of WWE throughout the Attitude Era. The period had its emphasis on segments and less concentration on wrestling.

The current PG era backstage segments that we see are heavy on advertisement and not on entertainment. It is only sad to realize that WWE ceased using backstage segments that make the fans laugh nowadays.

Despite this current forgettable state, the rich history of WWE has given us a lot of memorable segments to cherish. Some of these segments from the past are so good, that they could put a smile on Vladimir Putin’s face. With that said, here are some of the funniest backstage insult segments from WWE history.

Edge gets one over Kurt Angle

Before Edge became the Rated-R main event heel, he had a memorable mid-card run in SmackDown. At the same time, there was Kurt Angle. Angle’s entrance music was a phenomenon back then and everyone chanted along with it. WWE had the idea of incorporating this into a funny segment.

Edge gave Angle some pictures to enjoy. First, it looked natural. But as Angle went through those, fans started noticing the things that were written behind it. It was a classic case of Angle getting pranked. And the way in which Edge did it made the fans laugh out loud. Above all, this segment shows how good Angle was during such segments.

Eddie Guerrero does what he does best

Eddie Guerrero got over with the fans for his habit of stealing. Eddie had a lot of backstage segments where he pranked others and this was one of the best ones from the lot. The segment happened in the 2005 Royal Rumble. That year, WWE had backstage segments where superstars would pick their Royal Rumble entrance numbers.

Eddie and Ric came in to take their number at one point. Flair took the number and was dancing around in joy. Meanwhile, Eddie had a bad entrance number. Eddie, however, was not ready to keep the number he had and stole Flair’s number instead. Flair got his actual number afterwards. But the segment was a funny insult to Flair.

Stephanie McMahon gets ripped by three legends

Whenever Stephanie McMahon and Chris Jericho cross paths backstage, it is bound to be entertaining. Any of those segments would have easily made it to the list. The reason for including this one is because of the star power in it. Apart from the evergreen pairing of Stephanie and Jericho, Edge and Christian are also there.

Everyone loved to hate Stephanie during that time and when three fan favorites started spewing insults at her, the fans were thoroughly entertained. The comic timing between these three superstars was also spot on. And it ended up being a solid backstage segment altogether.

Rock and Triple H go down the memory lane

What happens when two Attitude Era legends come together in a backstage segment? They entertain, that is what happens. Rock and Triple H had a great exchange in 2014 and it ended up being a memorable PG era segment. They relied on the history that they had between them and simply blew the roof off.

The segment was so good that the internet started buzzing about a possible match between the two. It is still a big possibility as we might get to see a Rock vs. Triple H showdown at WrestleMania 32. And if everything goes right, we are bound to see such good segments down the lane as well. Both men were spewing insults at each other and deserve a place in the list.

Carlito gets knocked out

Back when Floyd Mayweather was the guest host of Monday Night Raw, WWE pulled off an excellent backstage segment. It involved Vince McMahon, Mayweather and DX with Carlito being on the receiving side. McMahon was polishing his boxing skills with Mayweather when Carlito came in demanding a match. DX soon entered the scene and made Vince knock out Carlito.

The funny dialogs were not given out by Carlito, but he did a great job of being knocked out when it was needed. And to add salt to the wound, Shawn Michaels used the trademark catchphrase of Carlito as well.

Goldiclaus

Goldust is underrated altogether. He is underrated when it comes to his wrestling skills and he is underrated when it comes to his sense of humor. This was one of the segments that showed how good Goldust is when given a funny segment. And for his company, there was Booker T. Booker and Goldust held the tag team titles at one point. During this time, they were responsible for some excellent segments.

The Goldiclaus segment was ‘the’ best one. In the end, Goldust pranks the hell out of Christian by presenting him with an Ass cream. The exchanges between Goldust and Booker before Christian’s arrival were funny as well.

Rock and Hurricane

Almost all the backstage segments that involve Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson are epic. It was one of the reasons why Rock got over as a great entertainer. He had a memorable spell with Hurricane back in the Attitude Era and whenever these two came on screen, the fans knew what to expect. This will probably be one of the most underrated feuds in Rock’s career.

We will only remember him feuding with the likes of Steve Austin or Undertaker. And the feud that Rock had with Hurricane will always be treated lightly. This feud, however, had a lot of entertaining backstage segments and matches that the fans loved.

Kane, Hogan and The Rock

We know the things that Rock could do when he is in a backstage segment. Add some good amount of Hulk Hogan and Kane into the mix, and this was a combination destined to entertain. Hogan and Rock started off the segment taking funny shots at Kane.

The awkwardness of working with a monster was the topic and once Kane enters the scene, the whole segment escalates. It not only showcases the brilliance of Hogan and Rock, but also shows how WWE used Kane back then. Even though his talking skills were limited thanks to the mask, Kane gets one over Rock and Hogan by imitating them.

Stephanie McMahon and Jericho, again

We have already seen an entry involving Stephanie McMahon and Chris Jericho. This one is one of their classic segments. Jericho redefines the word insult during this backstage segment. Also, the way in which Stephanie reacts to each comment is simply brilliant. This was another instance of an excellent chemistry between these two. Even if WWE books these two together today, they are sure to come up with an entertaining segment.

This is textbook stuff from Jericho. Wrestling schools might show this as an example on how to deliver a funny insulting promo backstage because it was pure brilliance from the human highlight reel.

Spirit Squad tries to catch DX

As mentioned earlier, DX had numerous memorable backstage segments in their history. And this makes it impossible to confine them to just one entry in the list. Back in 2006, DX had a bounty on their head. Spirit Squad tried to cash in on the opportunity but ended up being a laughing stock. Hunter and Michaels did not break a sweat in getting rid of the Spirit Squad.

It was the best possible insult that DX could give to Spirit Squad. The way in which they did it was incredibly funny as well.

Including all the funny backstage segments from the WWE history is impossible. So if your favorite moment is missed out; feel free to add them in comments.
