Survivor Series 2015: John Cena must turn heel

Cena’s heel turn has always been teased – but now is the right time to go ahead with it

Survivor Series might represent a “half-full” opportunity for WWE in its attempt to finish 2015 on a high note.

Yes, I said this could be a good thing. If the company wants to spice things up and create new opportunities, then have John Cena do what Hulk Hogan did, which turned the wrestling world on its ear back in 1996.

Have everyone’s All-American turn heel. What? Seriously? You cannot be serious!

Yes, I’m serious and the move makes all the sense in the world now that injuries have all but obliterated the roster. The move also gives rising stars a greater chance to shine as top face characters.

The idea has been something I have been kicking around for a while and has been discussed over and over again on the Internet and amongst loyal wrestling fans. Cena’s heel turn has been a wish of many of us, as was actually going to happen a little over four years ago, but the plug was pulled on the move.

Now, with Seth Rollins injured and there being little fanfare to a Survivor Series pay-per-view, a change in the game plan would do wonders. And make a lot of WWE fans very happy. Those chants of “Let’s Go Cena, Cena Sucks” would quickly change to only one mantra.

The juice generated from the move would remind us all of when Hulk Hogan turned his back on the wrestling world in what still remains the greatest heel turn and angle in the history of the business.

As written on Camel Clutch Blog, “To fully appreciate the impact of this angle I have to give you a little background. WCW had been a place up to that point that was more appreciated by hardcore and longtime wrestling fans for legends like Ric Flair and young athletic stars like Brian Pillman and Steve Austin. It had a nice following but it was more southern than national. Eric Bischoff was determined to change that and made a stunning move by signing Hulk Hogan in 1994. Bischoff put his job on the line and offered Hogan a deal which the WWE opted not to match.”

The impact would be different in nature – mainly because Cena has meant everything to WWE for the past 13 years. Hogan’s worldwide appeal allowed him to make the infamous change and it affected the masses and led the spike in WCW, but his appeal with the company was fairly new.

Also, given the fact fans had waned a bit on Hogan and wanted Sting to lead the charge for WCW against the New World Order, the move was perfect.

The same could be said for Cena, who can challenge Roman Reigns once he captures the WWE World Title. The move for Cena to claim the title for himself and tie Ric Flair for his 16th title reign has already been kicked around for 2016. Why not let the quest begin now?

If WWE is so hell bent on trying to create a new era with Reigns leading the charge, what better way to do it then to have the soon-to-be new champion lock horns with the guy who wants the title to better his place in history?

Right now, WWE really has nothing to lose.
