Trish Stratus asked WWE for the match against Charlotte
Over the past few years, WWE approached Trish Stratus a number of times about making returns to the ring and the former Women's Champion has either said yes or turned the company down. Most recently the company wanted her to face Asuka at NXT Takeover: Toronto back in 2016 but at the time Stratus was pregnant with her daughter Madison so Mickie James took her place.

This time around, Stratus was asked to be part of an autograph signing for SummerSlam since the company were bringing 'The Biggest Party of the Summer' out of Brooklyn for the first time in years and wanted Stratus to be one of the faces on display.
This was when Trish realized that this would be the perfect place for a farewell match and pitched the idea to WWE that she could take on Charlotte Flair in a match that allowed era vs era.

Vince McMahon reportedly fell off his chair because he was so excited about the match and Stratus was then given the green light to fight 'The Queen' in her hometown one last time.
