Maddox started out on the main roster in 2012 as a shady referee, when he low-blowed Ryback in an effort to help CM Punk to retain his WWE Championship at Hell in a Cell back in 2012. He would eventually work his way to becoming Raw General Manager. Maddox perhaps took more beatings than anyone that served as General Manager. The Raw General Manager would take beatings from Triple H to Big Show. During his tenure, he would start an alliance with Randy Orton which would go sour towards the end of his run. Triple H put Maddox in a match with Orton, who would beat Maddox until he lost consciousness, thus the match had to be stopped.
