WWE Rumors: WWE had different plans for Goldberg vs Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series

The Survivor Series match was not meant to be a squash match

According to a report from NoDq.com, the original plan for Brock Lesnar vs Goldberg 2 was for Lesnar to avenge his loss at Wrestlemania. However, plans had reportedly changed when Goldberg agreed to extend his deal to the Royal Rumble.

Apparently, Lesnar himself pushed for Goldberg’s signing and the squash match at Survivor Series, seeing good money in the whole ordeal. According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Goldberg is set to be a part of Wrestlemania 33 as well, with the match for him likely to be the completion of a trilogy with Lesnar.

Perhaps this time around, The Beast Incarnate may get his revenge. One of the other reasons that Goldberg had squashed Lesnar the way he did was to help him get more over, the way that he did in WCW. Had Goldberg’s deal been a one-and-done, there would be no doubt that The Beast Incarnate would avenge his loss from 12 and a half years ago.

The way the match went over garnered polarising reactions from the fans. A good chunk of the WWE Universe were confused, a large portion were angry or letdown at the finish but a large chunk were left satisfied. However, it was clearly done to further their storyline.

Goldberg announced the night after Survivor Series that he would be competing in the Royal Rumble match, becoming the first participant to announce his entry. According to Ryan Satin of Pro Wrestling Sheet, Lesnar is pencilled in to be part of the Royal Rumble match as well.

Upon hearing Goldberg’s entry into the Rumble, many fans believed that it would be a rehash of their feud from 2004 where Lesnar costs Goldberg a chance at winning the Rumble. It will be interesting to see how they plan to play it out this time around.
