From the WWE Rumor Mill: Backstage reason why Summer Rae was released from WWE

What happened to Summer Rae?

What's the story?

Summer Rae was one of the names in the recent list of released WWE Superstars. But what was the reason behind her release in the first place seeing how attractive she is and how she could be seemingly used in so many different ways? Dave Meltzer provided some insight on Wrestling Observer Radio as to why WWE made the decision to release the woman who made it Summer all year long.

In case you didn't know...

Summer Rae was an original member of the Total Divas cast and was thought to be a big future face fo the company. But she wasn't used the way most thought she would be, including Summer Rae.

The heart of the matter...

A lot of people were wondering why Summer Rae was released from her contract. She had an injury and never fully recovered. But it turns out what really affected her run might have been more of a backstage issue.

Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that WWE had initially wanted Summer Rae to portray a much different role on television but they didn't believe it was something she could make work.

The plan in 2011 when Summer Rae came into WWE was for her to be a non-wrestler and hold down a major attraction role akin to how Stacy Keibler and Torrie Wilson were used back in the day.

Unfortunately, WWE officials didn't see this as a good fit for her anymore. It also didn't help how her storyline with Rusev was nixed when Lana revealed via social media how she and Rusev were engaged in real life. Once major news outlets picked up the story there was really nothing WWE could do to save the angle.

What's next?

Summer Rae will be taking her talents to the world's indie circuit. Hopefully, time will show her gaining some major momentum and becoming wildly successful on her own.

It might be possible that a run on her own making towns as an indie wrestler will be the lightning bolt of attention WWE needs to give her another look and an excellent new chance for a fresh start.

Author's take

It's a shame Summer Rae never amounted to what she was truly capable of in WWE. She could work in the ring and is extremely beautiful.

It's a wonder WWE couldn't find a spot for her on the show. After all, an attractive blonde with a great personality isn't a really hard thing to sell.
