What’s the story?

Former WWE United States champion Chris Jericho has revealed that one of the original plans for WrestleMania 33 was for Y2J to defeat Kevin Owens for the Universal Title before defending it against Brock Lesnar the following months.

In case you didn’t know...

Y2J, who continues to make the headlines in the world of pro wrestling on a daily basis, has unveiled quite a few behind the scenes secrets over the years – and 2018 is no different.

The heart of the matter

During the Inside The Ropes interview, Jericho had the following to say in regards to the initial plan for him to face off against Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship.

“Once we got to about December, I started saying to Vince that this is the most popular I’ve ever been. I said that you could put the World Title on this guy [Jericho] if you wanted to, and he said absolutely. I said why don’t we have a title match at the Rumble [Jericho & Owens] and why don’t I win, then he wins it back the next week.
Vince eventually came back to me and told me that he wanted me to beat Owens for the title at WrestleMania, and then lose to Brock at the next pay-per-view. But that changed the next week.”

What’s next?

While Jericho prepares to face off against Tetsuya Naito, Brock Lesnar will be gearing up to defend his Universal Championship against both Kane and Braun Strowman at the Royal Rumble in a few weeks time.

Author’s take

While Brock vs Jericho for the title would’ve been fun, we’re glad that Owens was able to pick up his first ever win at the showcase of the immortals. Plus, it also meant that we were able to get a fun five-minute war out of Lesnar & Goldberg in Orlando.
