The WWE generally puts forth dark matches before and after the television tapings, primarily to examine the live crowd’s reactions to the matches/segments.

Author’s take

Well, this is why the attending WWE events in person is one of the most sports-entertaining (sic) experiences one could ever have.

Without the pressure of keeping things tip top on a live television broadcast, the WWE Superstars are known to be incredibly relaxed—letting their creativity and comic mannerisms flow unabashed—during the dark matches.
