WWE News: Damien Sandow talks about Vince McMahon's reaction to the stunt double gimmick

What’s the story?

On a recent episode of X-Pac’s podcast, Damien Sandow said that his run as the stunt double for The Miz was well received by Vince McMahon.

In case you didn’t know...

Last August, Sandow made his Impact debut under the name Aaron Rex. There was not a gimmick attached to the former WWE Tag Team Champion at first, but he started playing a character inspired by Liberace in January. However, this didn’t last long as he parted ways with Impact Wrestling in April.

The heart of the matter

Apparently, Vince McMahon was quite happy with the stunt double gimmick and even gave Sandow a degree of creative freedom. Here are Sandow’s quotes from the aforementioned podcast:

After a couple weeks, Vince (McMahon) was like, ‘Well, I noticed you are mimicking Miz?’ ‘Yup.’ ‘Do whatever you want, if it gets too overboard, I’ll pull you back. And I just went, ‘Okay.'”

What’s next?

Sandow’s departure from Impact Wrestling was pretty abrupt, and at this time he hasn’t surfaced with another promotion yet. There is a chance he could follow the route that Drew Galloway did and return to the WWE through NXT; however, there is no evidence suggesting that this move is on the horizon.

Author’s take

Sandow is a decent wrestler but a very entertaining character. I hope that he gets another chance through NXT as the WWE Universe absolutely loved him. Unfortunately, he just didn’t impress management enough to give him any sort of push.

I also thought the Liberace character was terrible and knew it wouldn’t go anywhere. The “Intellectual Savior of the Masses” was Sandow at his best, especially when he was in a tag team with Cody Rhodes. Creative split that pair way too soon.
