What's the story?

Daniel Bryan, since turning heel, has taken a different route to get heat from the fans, and it seems to have worked.

Ahead of his match at Royal Rumble against AJ Styles, where he will defend his WWE Championship, Bryan spoke to Newsweek about a variety of topics including his Survivor Series match against Brock Lesnar.

In case you didn't know...

At Survivor Series, in a champion vs champion match, Bryan faced off against Lesnar, and although the Universal Champion beat the WWE Champion, the two put on a great match.

Bryan has since feuded with Styles, a rivalry that's hit new heights with Bryan adopting a vegan, anti-capitalist gimmick that has riled up the crowd.

The heart of the matter

In the interview, Bryan revealed why he wants to be more hated than Brock Lesnar by the WWE Universe, while also speaking about how he wanted to put on a great match but fans to still hate him.

"I want to be more hated than Brock Lesnar. Some people want to cheer for the bad guy. I don’t want them to cheer, I want to be hated. So far I’ve had two jumpers at live events [laughs] and that’s an old school kind of mentality. You don’t want those guys to jump but you want them to hate you. You want them to pay to see you get beat. Or pay to see you get beat up or at the very least enjoy seeing you get beat up. That’s my thing," said Bryan to Newsweek.

"In the Brock Lesnar match, specifically, before we got to do much, I wanted people to see Lesnar kick my a**. But then I want them to be concerned about Brock Lesnar kicking my ass, and then I kick Brock Lesnar’s a**. And then when I lose, I still want [the fans] to be like 'I wanted to see him win but you know what, I hate him. What a despicable human being this guy is'," said Bryan.

What's next?

Bryan will face off against AJ Styles at Royal Rumble, this Sunday.
