WWE News: Goldberg on why his undefeated streak worked so well

Goldberg held a supposed undefeated streak of 173-0

What’s the story?

On Eric Bischoff’s podcast Bischoff On Wrestling, Goldberg revealed why his undefeated streak in WCW was such a success.

In case you didn’t know...

Goldberg has an undefeated streak of 173-0. However, the streak is well known to have been exaggerated by WCW. WWE superstars such as Chris Jericho and The Miz are among the names who have openly stated that the streak felt completely exaggerated.

It is believed that the streak officially ended with 155 wins under his belt. That is undoubtedly very impressive and shows the faith that WCW had in Goldberg, who turned out to be among the biggest homegrown stars in their history.

NXT Women's Champion is said to have already surpassed the streak, racking up over 163 wins so far without defeat. Goldberg even congratulated The Empress Of Tomorrow before she surpassed the streak.

The heart of the matter

Goldberg gave a detailed explanation as to why his WCW streak worked out so well:

“That’s why it worked. It wasn’t pre-planned. You guys gave the people what they wanted to see. Sure, they wanted to see Benoit and Guerrero chain wrestle and tell their story with all the false finishes and all of that. There’s something to surely be said for guys like Mike Tyson walking out and in thirty-two seconds knocking somebody’s block off. People just sit up on the edge of their seat and go, “What just happened?! Did I just see that?!””

He went on to speak about how the reception towards him and Big Show was back then:

“When The Giant and I went around the country and did dark matches he’d smoke a cigarette, pick up Charles Robinson and go to chokeslam him before he was even introduced. I’d spear him and jackhammer him before the bell even rang and people went berserk. You guys just gave them what they wanted. It was organic. There was no plan to it. I greatly appreciate what you said about, “Get this great character on TV,” but nobody knew unless you were clairvoyant.”

What’s next?

Goldberg will continue doing what he has to do and has not ruled out a WWE return. Don’t be surprised if we see the former Universal Champion back in the squared circle sometime in the next year or so.

Author’s Take

Goldberg is right in the sense that people paid to watch him destroy and not have technical wrestling matches that guys like Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, Dean Malenko, Chris Jericho, etc. excelled at.

His streak undoubtedly helped cement his legendary status in WCW, and no matter how inflated it is, it’s something that cannot be taken away from him.
