WWE News: John Cena learns cricket from an Aussie icon

From the wrestling ring, to the cricket field
From the wrestling ring to the cricket field

What's the story?

He has dominated the world of sports entertainment. He has made quite a buzz in Hollywood. And now at the age of 40, John Cena is learning to play a new game- cricket, from Former Australian Captain Shane Watson.

Cena was in Australia to publicize his movie 'Ferdinand', when he decided to step on to a cricket pitch and learn from the best.

In case you didn't know...

Even though he was a part of the recently concluded Survivor Series pay-per-view, John Cena only works a part-time schedule in WWE these days, owing to his notable success in Hollywood.

His latest blockbuster is an animated film 'Ferdinand', about a Spanish Fighting Bull with a non-violent nature, slated for release in mid-December.

Shane Watson is a retired Australian cricketer, who has many accolades under his belt including the highly coveted 'Man of the Tournament' in the IPL, a record two times.

The heart of the matter

Because John Cena was in Sydney to promote his film, he decided to partake in Australia's favourite past time of cricket. Self admittedly, he did not fare well on the field, but we all know that he's a humble man.

This bit of news has set social media on fire, and it just goes to show how widespread the roots of WWE are, across the whole world. Even when he's not directly involved in a WWE program, Cena is an ambassador for the company, wherever he goes.

What's next?

As Royal Rumble season approaches, we do have a feeling that Cena may come back to bolster the card. It remains to be seen whether he returns to RAW or SmackDown Live. Bear in mind that at this moment he's a free agent.

Author's take

John Cena has brought more mainstream attention to WWE in recent times, than anyone not named The Rock. May he continue to do cool things and build WWE's fanbase around the world.

I'm not the biggest fan of 'real' sports, but I can imagine how cool a sight it must be for cricket fans, to see Cena on the field.
