What’s the story?

WWE star John Cena appeared on Variety.com’s Playback podcast with Kristopher Tapley and opened up about the future of Southpaw Regional Wrestling. He revealed that the show has a bright future and more episodes are in the works.

The background

WWE’s Southpaw Regional Wrestling is a comedy/parody series. It presents a light-hearted take on Southern pro wrestling that flourished in the 1980’s. Many fans feel that is a nice throwback to the time when territories were the order of the day in pro wrestling.

On the show, ‘The Champ’ plays the role of an announcer/presenter named Lance Catamaran while Luke Gallows plays a character named Tex Ferguson. Besides Cena and Gallows, SRW also features the likes of Chris Jericho, Lana and Karl Anderson in pivotal roles. Its first few episodes received rave reviews from all quarters.

The heart of the matter

On Variety.com’s podcast, the erstwhile ‘Doctor of Thuganomics’ said that SRW has proved to be a major hit and found an audience for itself. As such, more episodes of the show are on the way.

“It was really fun, and there’s more on the way. I have seen Tex Ferguson unleashed, be on the lookout for more Tex Ferguson,” he said.

Moreover, Cena added that SRW’s success proves that the WWE fanbase has a good sense of humour and loves stuff that tickles the funny bone.

What’s next?

The first few episodes of SRW were runaway hits. As such, it will be worth watching whether the upcoming episodes live up to the high standards set by the predecessors.

Author’s Take

WWE previously come up with shows such as Camp WWE and tried to expand its fan base even further. However, those attempts were not too successful.

The rave reviews received by SRW, indicates that the WWE has finally hit the right notes. This could help the brand grow bigger in the days to come.
