What's the story?
This week's SmackDown Live saw Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn come out to complain that they were cheated out of their match with AJ Styles for the WWE Championship. Kevin Owens and Sami asked Daniel Bryan for another chance at the title because they felt that their bout had ended in an unfair manner at the Royal Rumble.
Daniel Bryan confirmed that they would get another opportunity at AJ Styles's title, but not in a handicap match, like at the Royal Rumble. He put Sami Zayn in a Number One Contender's Match against Kevin Owens for an opportunity at the WWE Championship.
In case you didn't know...
Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens were given an opportunity to face AJ Styles in a Handicap match at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view for the WWE Championship. It looked Owens and Zayn had the advantage in the bout, as they used their extra numbers to dominate AJ Styles.
At one moment, Owens and Zayn reached out for a tag but were not able to reach other. Both the referee and Styles thought the tag had occurred and that Owens was the legal man in the bout. Styles pinned him to win their face-off and retain their title.
The heart of the matter
Zayn and Owens demanded a rematch for the WWE Championship from AJ Styles as their match had ended in controversy. When Styles denied them the chance, they took their demands to the SmackDown Live General Manager, Daniel Bryan.
Bryan acknowledged their right to a rematch and said that he would give them an opportunity. He said that Owens and Zayn would face each other in a match to become the Number One Contender for Styles' WWE Championship on next week's SmackDown Live.
Zayn and Owens were less than thrilled with this announcement and did not hide their irritation.
