What's the story?

WCW announcer Tony Schiavone recently sat with WWE Hall of Famer Edge and his friend Christian on "E & C's Pod of Awesomeness".

Schiavone talked in depth on the event that kick-started WCW's downfall.

In case you didn't know...

Tony Schiavone was the lead announcer for WCW during the Monday Night Wars. He was witness to some of the most memorable moments in the history of professional wrestling. Schiavone was infamous for giving away Monday Night Raw's results on a weekly basis and making a sarcastic remark on how Mick Foley wasn't a draw.

The heart of the matter

Vince McMahon won the Monday Night Wars in March 2001, when he bought off WCW.

While talking to Edge and Christian on their podcast, Schiavone went into great detail on how WCW's downfall kicked off. He stated that there were a bunch of reasons why WCW's ship sunk, but the major reason for the downfall was the introduction of another weekly live show called Thunder.

According to Tony, Eric Bischoff had talked about introducing another show in addition to Monday Nitro. Bischoff had said that the team didn't have enough manpower to do a second show, and it could only happen if Turner demanded it. A month after Bischoff made this statement, Thunder debuted.

I remember Eric saying he had a meeting with production and that they want us to do another show for TBS. Nitro was great on TNT, so they wanted a weekly show for TBS and he said, 'I don't think we can do it - I don't think we have the manpower to do it.' And he said, 'unless Ted Turner comes to me and says we have to do it, we're not going to do Thunder.' And I guess Ted came and said we're going to do it because it wasn't long after that, a month or so after that, we started doing it.

What's next?

Tony Schiavone is currently doing well for himself as an announcer in MLW, while Vince McMahon's WWE has become a globally recognized brand, with Stephanie McMahon wanting to see it become as big of a conglomerate as Disney.
