What’s the story?

During a recent episode of Dinner with the King, WWE legend Jerry “The King” Lawler revealed the original plans of Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens during the Royal Rumble kickoff show.

In case you didn’t know…

During this past weekend’s Royal Rumble pay-per-view at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn competed in a 2-on-1 handicap match against AJ Styles for the WWE Championship. Despite having the numbers game on their side, Zayn and Owens failed to capture the WWE Championship as “The Phenomenal One” successfully walked out with the WWE Title.

The heart of the matter

While speaking with Glenn Moore during this week’s Dinner with the King show, Jerry Lawler said that he had a great time at the Royal Rumble Kickoff show and pointed towards the fact that the Kickoff show segment involving Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens was not planned. Owens and Zayn, who were in interaction with Peter Rosenborg and Renee Young during the Royal Rumble Kickoff show, apparently had no interest in speaking to Rosenborg, leaving Jerry Lawler to ask all the questions to the duo. What’s next?

As noted during this week’s episode of Smackdown Live, the duo of Kevin and Sami have finally started to fall apart after failing to capture the WWE Championship at The Royal Rumble pay-per-view. The two former NXT Champions will collide against each other once again during next week’s episode of SmackDown Live and the winner of that match will get the chance to challenge AJ Styles for the WWE Title at this year’s Fastlane pay-per-view.

Author’s Take

It is an absolute shame that the WWE creative could not capitalize properly on the duo of Owens and Zayn. The two men have amazing chemistry with each other both as a team and as opponents. However, I think the WWE creative team should have given Owens and Zayn a proper run as a tag team. The two men are certainly capable of taking the WWE Tag Team division to new heights.
