What's the story?

It's been thirteen years since the shocking death of one of wrestling's greatest performers, Eddie Guerrero. However, Rey Mysterio lost more than that back in 2005, as he lost his best friend.

In case you didn't know...

Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio arrived on the wrestling scene at similar times and even captivated global audiences with their incredible matches in WCW. Their match at Halloween Havoc 1997 is still considered one of the greatest wrestling matches of all time.

Guerrero and Mysterio would later rekindle their rivalry in WWE. While Latino Heat made the jump quite early, Mysterio wouldn't arrive in the company until after the shutdown of WCW. However, when they met on SmackDown again as part of the SmackDown 6, they were able to capture that magic again.

Whether it was facing each other in singles or tag action, or uniting to capture the WWE Tag Team Championship, Mysterio and Guerrero had something special on camera, and it helped that they were so close backstage.

Mysterio and Guerrero were inseparable. When Eddie Guerrero passed away in 2005, Mysterio was absolutely crushed, losing, not only his greatest rival but his closest friend. It left a hole in his heart, and even to this day, Mysterio struggles with his loss.

The heart of the matter

On Instagram today, Mysterio posted pictures of himself visiting the grave of Eddie Guerrero. Mysterio revealed that it was the first time he'd actually visited his friend's grave in the past thirteen years.

Always had a hard time wanting to visit Eddie & found myself cowardly refusing it due to the pain & memories from that day. Finally this past Monday, after 13yrs, I had the courage to visit him and have a one on one moment with him, & exactly what I feared of happening, happened. Memories from that day were flashing through my head but his presence was much stronger and [I] was able to cope and maintain my composure.

Mysterio went on to talk about how great it was to know so many fans and future stars looked to Eddie Guerrero as their inspiration and a hero.

What's next?

Mysterio has returned to the WWE and is currently involved in a feud with one of the best luchadors in the world, Andrade. The Ultimate Underdog, hopefully, can help mentor the next Mysterios and Guerreros of the world.
