What’s the story?

In an interview with ESPN, Sanity's Eric Young discussed the importance of winning championships in professional wrestling.

In case you didn’t know...

At the most recent NXT Takeover event, Brooklyn III, Sanity’s Alexander Wolfe and Eric Young captured the NXT Tag Team Championships, defeating the Authors of Pain.

It is the first championship Eric Young has won in the WWE.

The heart of the matter

During the interview, Young explained that although championships are not necessarily “won” they do hold meaning for that person’s career, citing that the higher ups must believe in you and trust you enough to put a championship on you. Although he referred to the titles as “props”, he went on to cite their importance.

Young explained what winning the Tag Team Championships at NXT Takeover: Brooklyn III meant to him and said, “This (title win) was about a massive, worldwide billion-dollar company investing just a little bit of itself in me.”

He also expressed enthusiasm and seemed extremely motivated to be a part of NXT moving forward by stating, “I'm a big part of what's going on here, and even after 20 years, I can't wait.”

What's next?

It remains to be seen if Young and his stable, Sanity, will continue their feud The Authors of Pain in NXT.

Author’s Take

It is always interesting to read about veterans of professional wrestling referring to championship belts and other items as props. However, it is also fascinating to see the other side of the business, where Superstars make connections between their on-screen success and achievements behind the scenes.

It is obvious through his words in the interview that Eric Young is enjoying his time in NXT as a talent and mentor for younger stars.

It is also telling to read about Eric Young, a 20-year veteran of the profession, and his excitement for the future in NXT and that he is happy to be a part of it.
