What's the story?

It hasn't been officially announced yet but the anticipated tag-team match at WrestleMania between Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan against Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn could be in jeopardy after the WWE released an article indicating that Shane McMahon had developed an infection and would need to undergo surgery.

In case you didn't know...

Daniel Bryan and Shane McMahon are the authority figures on SmackDown Live and have been involved in an ongoing storyline for months featuring Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens rebelling against them. This culminated with the heel pair brutally attacking Shane McMahon and then Daniel Bryan, leading people to believe the tag-team match was going to be announced in the ensuing weeks.

The heart of the matter

The WWE have since released an article stating that Shane McMahon has been hospitalised with acute diverticulitis, which is a severe infection, and he also has an umbilical hernia which will require surgery.

McMahon went to the Caribbean with his family to rest and recuperate. While there, Shane developed a massive infection due to acute diverticulitis and was hospitalized for several days in Antigua before being flown back to a New York-area hospital, where he is currently being treated with heavy doses of antibiotics. The doctors in New York have also discovered that Shane suffered an umbilical hernia during the attack, which will require surgery once the infection has been eradicated.

McMahon was diagnosed with 'kayfabe' injuries following the initial attack, which were a laryngeal contusion and trapezius and rhomboid strains, so this is a new, different set of injuries.

In 2009, during his stint with UFC, Brock Lesnar was diagnosed with Diverticulitis which kept him out of action for almost a year. The Beast Incarnate's bout with the disease was reportedly serious and even termed "life-threatening" by several media members.

What's next?

It's unclear what all of this really means, we can't be sure if Shane is really injured if the attack did actually lead to a hidden injury that has gotten infected or if it's all just an attempt to further the storyline involving Owens and Zayn.

Author's take

I'm leaning towards this being a legitimate situation, I don't think the WWE would run a surgery angle less than two weeks away from 'Mania only to have Shane appear and wrestle anyway. So, the question is now, if this is legit, who will be Bryan's partner?
