What's the story?

Former Intercontinental Champion Shelton Benjamin has taken to social media to express his anger at finding a loaded gun in his rental car.

The SmackDown Live Superstar tweeted at Budget Car Rental that he found the loaded weapon in the glove compartment of his car four days after hiring it.

In case you didn't know...

Shelton Benjamin returned to WWE last year to join forces with Chad Gable and, while the two have been on the wrong end of several Tag Team Championship matches against The Usos, they regained form last night with a decisive victory over The Ascension.

Benjamin is a former Intercontinental, United States and two-time Tag Team Champion with Charlie Haas.

The heart of the matter

Well, it's a disaster story for Budget Car Rental and it couldn't be less lucky for them with who made the discovery.

Benjamin has a large social media following and has accused the company of endangering his reputation, freedom and life.

Aside from Shelton Benjamin tweeting his story, it's a publicity disaster as more WWE Superstars and backstage officials have shared and reacted, all with the same understandable reaction.

Randy Orton reacted with some, let's say colourful language, but then shared his tweet with a more PG suggestion...

What's next?

Budget Car Rental is yet to respond to Benjamin's tweet.

Author's take

Well, this is pretty crazy and pretty much a PR disaster for the company. Who knows if it was a one-off error in not checking the car? If so, it's bad luck that someone with such a huge following was the unlucky person to rent the car with a loaded gun in the glove compartment - but it could have been so much worse for Shelton Benjamin.

It may just be a careless error from the company in not checking the car over after its previous return - but it's one that could have easily cost Benjamin his career or even his life in the worst case scenario. Thankfully the former United States Champion found the gun before anything else happened. Things may not have ended so well if the Superstar had been pulled over by the police.
