WWE News: SmackDown Women's Championship and Tag Team Championship announced for SmackDown Live!
WWE SmackDown Live! General Manager Daniel Bryan announced before the kick-off of SmackDown Live! that two new Championships will debut later in the night. After the blue brand went live from The Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut, Bryan and SmackDown commissioner Shane McMahon came up on stage to reveal two new belts – SmackDown Women’s Championship and Tag Team Championship – which will be handed to the respective winners at Backlash.
The SmackDown Women’s Championship belt looks like a replica of the WWE Women’s Championship, albeit blue in colour and will be handed over to one of the Divas following a Six-Pack Challenge at Backlash on 11th September. The six Divas competing for the inaugural SmackDown Women’s Championship are Nikki Bella, Becky Lynch, Alexa Bliss, Naomi, Carmella and Natalya.
The other belt to make its debut was the Tag Team title, the inaugural winner of which will also be decided at Backlash – wherein two teams will compete in the final at the pay-per-view. The two teams competing for the title will be decided by a tournament which will start tonight. The six teams as of now in contention for the title are The Vaudevillains, The Usos, The Hype Bros, Breezango, American Alpha and The Ascension.
The hottest free agent, Heath Slater also stands a chance to be in contention for the Tag Team Championship, should he find a partner before the end of tonight’s episode of the Blue Brand.
