From the WWE rumor mill: Reason why Emma is in the Raw Women's Title match at No Mercy

O
That's not photoshopped, Emma is in this match

What's the story?

When Emma was inserted into the Raw Women's Title picture going into No Mercy it confused some people. But it turns out there might be an interesting reason why WWE made this decision.

In case you didn't know...

Emma has been around for awhile. She even made it to the finals in the tournament to crown the first-ever NXT Women's Champion. Emma might have lost the match to Paige but WWE's first Australian female Superstar didn't let that stop her from making a splash when diving into the main roster.

She was paired with Santino Marella for a bit of comedy goodness but when that partnership faded Emma's star didn't seem to shine as bright anymore.

After sustaining an injury Emma was given a repackaging and vignettes ran for several months hyping her return as "Emmalina." She was supposed to be a supermodel character but we'll never really know what WWE had planned for her because it was canceled due to the way she was executing the gimmick.

She transformed back into Emma and continued on in her enhancement talent ways touting how she started the WWE Women's Revolution.

The heart of the matter

It really got to Mickey James how Emma was running around claiming she started the Women's Revolution. So they had a match to settle the score. Emma won that encounter so Mickey had to tweet a bunch of hashtags that probably made her gag.

But Emma was still coming off of a win so when she approached Kurt Angle and demanded a shot at the Raw Women's Title at No Mercy he set up a tag match to determine if she'd get it. Nia Jax and Emma won their match so a fatal four-way for the Raw Women's Title was booked for No Mercy.

Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that Emma was placed in this match to protect Sasha, Nia, and Alexa. It isn't clear if there will be a title change or not at this juncture, but Emma's in the match for a reason.

The plan is apparently to have Emma lose because WWE doesn't want Nia Jax, Sasha Banks, or Alexa Bliss taking a loss right now.

What's next?

No matter if Emma loses her match at No Mercy she will still continue on. After all, she's taken losses before and knows the sting of defeat well. But it's still a shot for Emma to grab that proverbial brass ring so who knows what might be down the line if she keeps working at it.

Author's take

The first time I saw Emma, she was popping bubbles. For some reason, I never bought her as a heel even though she can play that bitter card pretty well. She should go back to popping bubbles, but that would probably mean WWE has to dig those bubble machines out of storage and they don't have time for that right now.
