What's the story?

In a recent episode of Something to Wrestle With, Bruce Prichard talked about the infamous match between Goldberg and Brock Lesnar at Wrestlemania 20.

Bruce Prichard worked with WWE at the time and revealed the backstage reaction when the New York crowd turned on both the Superstars in a highly unexpected manner.

In case you didn't know..

While, Goldberg and Brock Lesnar have clashed on more than one occasion at the Grandest Stage of Them All, their encounter at the 20th edition of Wrestlemania will always be remembered for the notorious fan reaction and the controversy it caused.

At the time, both Brock Lesnar and Goldberg had made it public that they plan to leave WWE after Wrestlemania 20. The fans in New York did not take kindly to these claims and lost all interest in the match between the two behemoths. The fans started booing the match heavily.

The heart of the matter

Here is what Bruce Prichard said about the backstage reaction when these events unfolded:

I was sitting at the audio desk in the arena and just thinking to myself, ‘Holy God.’ Because you felt it. I mean, obviously, I think you could feel it at home. The audience knew what was going on. Both guys had been very public that they were leaving. All the audience wanted, the only thing they wanted in my opinion at this point is they wanted Steve to kick both of their asses. Because Steve wasn’t going anywhere and he was their guy. So it just, the crowd wanted it to be over"

On what he thought Lesnar felt before the match:

I don’t know if Brock and Goldberg really expected it to be as bad as it was. I think Brock did. I think Brock knew exactly what was going to happen when he went out there. But I don’t think that they thought it would happen to Goldberg.

He also stated that Goldberg won the match purely because Goldberg was the babyface, and it has nothing to do with rumours of Vince McMahon being upset with Lesnar.

What's next?

Brock Lesnar is currently the Universal Champion and will be defending his championship against Seth Rollins at Wrestlemania 35.
