WWE Power Rankings: 16 October, 2016

Reigns and Sasha had a good week

There were rumours about Vince McMahon being unhappy with how the WWE product is going. This is perhaps the reason we saw some major shifts last week. WWE made some huge announcement throughout last week with the return of Goldberg and the Women’s Hell in a Cell match being the most notable ones.

Apart from this, the fairy tale run of James Ellsworth infused with the help of Dean Ambrose was also a talking point all over the wrestling fan base. All this and the string of matches that happened during Monday Night Raw and SmackDown Live have caused a stir in the WWE Power Rankings.

We have some new entries as well so without further introductions, here are this week’s WWE Power Rankings.

#10 James Ellsworth (NR)

Anyman with two hands have a chance in the Power Rankings

Mark this point in time, because this is the first time ever that James Ellsworth is making his entry into the Power Rankings. And it could also be the last. Ellsworth showed up on this week’s SmackDown and did something that none of us thought that he could do. He defeated reigning WWE champion AJ Styles and got himself a shot at the title next week.

He did have a helping hand from Dean Ambrose, but in the record books, it stands James Ellsworth 1-0 AJ Styles. The chances of Ellsworth going all the way and getting the gold are low, but getting a win over the champ was enough to get him a place in the Power Rankings.

#9 Dean Ambrose (NC):

Ambrose had the upper hand over AJ Styles

Dean Ambrose did not have a match to showcase this week, but it was a strong week for him nevertheless.

Ambrose managed to get the better of AJ Styles by helping out James Ellsworth. By doing this, he has filled in the slot as the only contender for AJ Styles.

John Cena’s absence was beautifully masked by WWE using James Ellsworth, and as the win of Ellsworth came as a direct result of Ambrose’s antics, we are now back to a one-on-one situation between Ambrose and Styles. Ambrose would be out to haunt Styles once again in the upcoming week, meaning that we should keep an eye out on him.

#8 Seth Rollins (NR)

Rollins defeated Jericho at Raw

Rollins hasn’t been having the best of runs due to the injuries he picked up at Clash of Champions.

He was kept way from the action for some time due to the same reason, but he returned with a great match on Raw this week. Rollins had earlier booked a date with Kevin Owens at Hell in a Cell and this week was all about keeping it.

He had a match with Chris Jericho to determine whether or not the championship match at Hell in a Cell would be a triple threat or not. Fortunately for Rollins, he defeated Jericho in a convincing manner and has got his momentum back on track. The win also helps him to re-enter the Power Rankings after a short hiatus.

#7 Bray Wyatt (NR)

Bray has his momentum back

Bray Wyatt got a huge win at No Mercy thanks to the return of Luke Harper. His career seemed to be heading nowhere with all the defeats that he was piling up, but now that he has Harper by his side once again, there is a new found direction.

This week, Bray teamed up with Luke Harper to face Kane and Randy Orton. Kane disappeared midway through the match and this paved the way for Orton’s defeat.

These back to back wins have helped Bray to make his entry into the Power Rankings and he debuts at the seventh spot. Bray would be looking to build on this momentum and go forward in the coming weeks.

#6 Charlotte (-2)

Chase mode on

The former Women’s champion will be part of history at Hell in a Cell. But this week, she was involved in the mixed tag team match on Raw. Charlotte and Rusev teamed up in a losing effort against Sasha Banks and Roman Reigns.

This loss costs Charlotte two places in the Power Rankings as she slips down to sixth place, suffering such a defeat on the back of losing the Women’s title contributed to this drop as well.

This week, Charlotte would be out to get her momentum on track and this is exactly what WWE should do as the match at Hell in a Cell is so important to everyone involved.

#5 Dolph Ziggler (+1)

Improves his rankings

Dolph Ziggler went up against his Spirit Squad buddies this week on SmackDown.

The reigning Intercontinental champion, who saved his career at No Mercy, came out with a win in the handicap match which was a huge boost for him. Miz did try to get the upper hand over Ziggler after the match, but thanks to a timely save from Heath Slater and Rhyno; Ziggler ended the week on a positive note.

The fallout of the same could be expected this week on SmackDown as a six-man tag team match involving all these men looks likely. A win in this could help Ziggler get higher in the rankings.

#4 Sasha Banks (+1)

Had a good outing on Raw

Sasha Banks’ title reign is going well so far. She had a solid win on Monday Night Raw this week and it helped her to get the better of her rival Charlotte and book the fourth place in Power Rankings. Sasha in turn, becomes the highest ranked female wrestler in the list, a position which belonged to Charlotte till last week.

Ahead of her match at Hell in a Cell against Charlotte, the win alongside Reigns comes us a good momentum builder. But then again, there are still some weeks to go before the pay-per-view and Sasha will have to hold on tight.

#3 Kevin Owens (-1)

Slips down one place

The reigning WWE Universal Champion did not have a match this week but his presence was there to be felt.

Kevin Owens and Chris Jericho were part of an entertaining segment on Raw and Owens also had his mark on the main event between Jericho and Rollins. The win that Rollins got against Jericho, was a setback and a positive for Owens at the same time.

He avoided the Triple Threat but Rollins defeated his best friend making it a bitter-sweet outing for Owens. The inactivity and the strong booking that the topper of this week’s Rankings got, drops Owens one place.

#2 AJ Styles (-1)

Ellsworth ruined the plans of AJ

AJ Styles, who has enjoyed a stay on top of the Power Rankings for quite some time, suffers a drop after his loss to James Ellsworth on SmackDown.

Though the champion successfully defended his title at No Mercy against John Cena and AJ Styles, the defeat at the hands of Ellsworth is a big blow for him. AJ will now be defending his title at SmackDown next week and holding on to the same in a convincing manner would be a good way to get back on top.

Elsewhere, on the longer run, a feud with Dean Ambrose seems likely as the two could once again face off at Survivor Series for the title once the Ellsworth scene settles down.

#1 Roman Reigns (+2)

Reigns on top!

After a long time, Roman Reigns comes back to the top thanks to the strong booking that he currently gets. Reigns has been getting the better of Rusev for a long time and last week, he teamed up with Sasha Banks to defeat Rusev and Charlotte.

Reigns is yet to take a fall after winning the United States championship and his path towards the title was something similar.

What worked in favour of Reigns this week in the Power Rankings is the fall that Kevin Owens and AJ Styles took. Owens had a week of inactivity which cost him whereas AJ Styles suffered a huge defeat at the hands of James Ellsworth.
