WWE Rumors: Jerry Lawler turns down match against AEW star
WWE Hall of Famer Jerry Lawler recently turned down a match against the latest All Elite Wrestling signee, Orange Cassidy, as per a report by Wrestling Observer Newsletter. The bout would have taken place at an indie show for Game Changer Wrestling.
Cassidy's indie run
Orange Cassidy has been making waves on the indie scene for a long while now. He has made a name for himself in CHIKARA and Beyond Wrestling. Cassidy boasts an extremely unusual gimmick that would see him go on with his match in a mood that screams 'disinterested'. His mannerisms include hilariously punching and kicking his opponents in as slow a pace as possible.
This could possibly be the reason why Jerry Lawler is reportedly 'shocked' that Cassidy bagged a spot in AEW. Lawler has been a mainstay on the pro-wrestling scene for several decades now, and spent the better part of his latter years announcing for WWE, primarily on its flagship show, Monday Night Raw.
Lawler rejects match against Cassidy
Lawler has been active on the indie scene, and was reportedly offered a match against Orange Cassidy at a Game Changer Wrestling indie event. Lawler not only turned down the offer, he was also said to be shocked at the fact that All Elite Wrestling signed Cassidy to a contract. Lawler will still wrestle at the show, and his scheduled opponent will be Mance Warner.
Cassidy's signing came in as a shocker to many, and AEW EVP Cody Rhodes was quick to defend it. When a Twitter user asked Cody as to how does he justify signing Cassidy, when AEW has vowed to be taken seriously as a sports-based product, Cody responded by saying that Cassidy is a fun wrestler and although AEW is 100% sports-based, competitors vary in style.
