What's the story?

Kevin Owens made his WWE return this week on SmackDown Live and it turned out to be a fruitful one indeed for the Prizefighter.

Amongst all the surprises that came along with KO's comeback, the Stunner he used during the tag team match was inarguably the biggest shocker of the night. We know you're wondering, has the move replaced the Pop Up Powerbomb as his finisher?

Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer had the answer on the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Radio.

In case you didn't know...

This week's episode of SmackDown was built around the contract signing for the WWE Championship match between Kofi Kingston and Daniel Bryan for Fastlane 2019. However, Vince McMahon came out just before Kofi signed on the dotted line and removed the New Member from the match.

The WWE boss instead replaced the WWE veteran with Owens, who made his way out to the ring and signed the contract, much to the frustration of the New Day and the fans.

Owens and Kingston teamed up later on in the night to take on Bryan and Erick Rowan. The former WWE Universal Champion got the win for his team after he laid out the WWE Champion with the Stunner.

The heart of the matter

Meltzer revealed that WWE has allowed Owens to use the Stunner as his new finishing move. As for the Pop-up Powerbomb, Owens will continue to use the move in spades. Additionally, expect superstars to kick out of Owens' former finisher as the Stone Cold-inspired Stunner will be KO's go-to maneuver to end matches from here onwards.

The Stunner is one of the most popular WWE finishers of all time and is viewed as a perfect tool in Owens' arsenal as a babyface going forward. This is one of reasons why Owens may have been allowed to use the move as his finisher as it will raise his stock as babyface.

Owens even took to Twitter and sent out a message to the man who made the move a household sensation, Steve Austin.

What's next?

Owens' return as a face as freshened things up during the busiest time of the year. And of course, we're sure WWE has something planned for Kingston too, who was stripped of the opportunity to realize his dream of becoming WWE Champion at Fastlane.

The road to WrestleMania 35 just got more interesting.
