WWE SmackDown: 5 Ideas why Vince McMahon may have paired Charlotte Flair with Carmella

Does WWE have big plans for this newly-formed tag team?
Does WWE have big plans for this newly-formed tag team?

Of course, the two women have very similar physical appearances and are gorgeous in their own way, with long, blonde flowing locks. But beyond this, why are Charlotte Flair and Carmella a tag team unit, you ask?

I mean it was teased that they would get on the same page during an episode of SmackDown Live, and the next week, they actually teamed up against Sasha and Becky. It is a little confusing, especially if you consider the fact that Carmella is the current WWE 24/7 Champion.

But Vince McMahon is someone who always has his reasons for the moves that he makes, and I'm guessing that he must have something interesting in store with this alliance. I will not even claim to know how the mind of the genius works, but I can make a few educated guesses and I hope you will come along for the ride.

I invite you all to leave a comment and let me know your thoughts.

#5 To begin the transformation of Charlotte Flair into a babyface character

It is very clear that going forward, Sasha Banks and Bayley will be a dominant heel unit. Even if the duo were to be split up during the upcoming WWE draft, I'm guessing that each will continue her devious ways in her respective brand.

What the women's division lacks are strong babyfaces except for Becky Lynch right now. While Carmella is beloved, because of the way she's been booked thus far, she's not yet seen as a 'top star'. Which means that there's immense potential for someone like Charlotte Flair to turn face and dominate the roster.

The association with Carmella will help Flair when it comes to becoming a babyface. Carmella has become a really beloved character since she was paired up with R-Truth.

#4 Potential title challengers for Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross

Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross have been exemplary Women's Tag Team Champions, and have put away their competition with utter and sheer finesse. And then, there's the whole issue of doing your job a little too well. Because they've run through the competition, there's absolutely nobody left that they haven't faced yet when it comes to fresh contenders.

I know that it looks like The Kabuki Warriors may be next to face Bliss and Cross, but I think it just makes sense to book Charlotte Flair and Carmella against Bliss and Cross for the titles down the line someday. Alexa Bliss can move out of heel and babyface roles quite seamlessly, and if it were necessary for her to assume a heel role to put Charlotte Flair over as a babyface, she would be able to do so quite well. I love Asuka and Kairi Sane but does it really make sense to put the titles on them, considering WWE usually doesn't know how to book international babyfaces over the long term (as we saw with Nakamura)?

So yeah, for them to dominate the women's tag team division, Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross need strong opponents like Charlotte Flair and of course, Carmella.

#3 Will elevate Carmella up a few levels

I know that on paper, Carmella may be a champion but the truth is that the 24/7 Championship isn't the most valuable title in the roster. As Stevie Richards recently told us in an interview with our very own Gary Cassidy, the Hardcore Championship was conceived to shine a spotlight on the men in the undercard, so that everyone got used (I'm paraphrasing).

Despite the fact that she's a current champion, Carmella isn't even at the same level per se as a Sasha or Bayley, in the WWE hierarchy. One can argue that Charlotte Flair is the biggest star that the WWE Women's Division has at this point, and therefore, it will allow her to be elevated up a few rungs.

And the most important thing that this allows Carmella to do is shake off the notion that she's only a comedy character and nothing beyond that, owing to her partnership with R-Truth over the last few months. As she's been so strongly involved in the 24/7 Championship picture, it is sometimes easy to forget that she can be a top star if the situation so demands it.

Who would have thought she'd last longer than Enzo Amore or Big Cass?

#2 To not necessarily have Charlotte and Becky become best friends

I know that Becky Lynch teams up with Charlotte Flair to take on Sasha Banks and Bayley in a tag team contest for the SmackDown premiere on FOX. And yet, as cool as it would be, I don't want Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair to become a permanent pairing simply because there's so much equity in having the two women face off against one another. They are two legendary rivals, even if they are best of friends when the cameras aren't rolling.

And Carmella is a good substitute in a sense because she's uncharted territory in a way, and fits into this rivalry because of her relationship with Bayley back in NXT. BayMella was an actual thing and something that the fans used to love dearly. With Charlotte Flair, she's out to remind Bayley that she used to be someone good but now has transformed into someone that she never thought that she would.

In a sense, it's great for WWE to dredge up stuff from NXT because a lot of fans have grown up following their journey from the said brand. And new viewers may just be curious enough to check NXT out on USA. Charlotte and Becky will also almost certainly be split up during the upcoming WWE draft.

#1 Rewarding Carmella for her willingness to do everything

Carmella used to be a heel and was paired with James Ellsworth with whom she had a variety of entertaining and comedic moments on screen. Then, she would change up her look, go babyface, and indulge in 7-second dance breaks with R-Truth in what became a pairing that the WWE Universe seemed to enjoy.

And then, when R-Truth became immersed in the whole 24/7 Championship picture, she essentially became the sidekick, 'the straight guy' as they say in comedic parlance like Jim from 'The Office'. Because you have a character in Michael Scott who's crazy and outrageous you need someone who's a measure of sanity like Jim, and Carmella assumed this role in WWE, during R-Truth's many WWE 24/7 Championship reigns.

And in a way, I'm guessing the fact that this pairing happened, is a promotion for her, a little gift from Vince McMahon and Eric Bischoff to say thank you for doing everything that was asked and also pitching ideas (as she has been known to do in the past), to create quality content.
