WWE Survivor Series 2019: 5 Reasons why NXT won the brand war

Survivor Series 2019 was a history-making show, the involvement of NXT this year meant that there were a number of triple threat matches as part of the show, perhaps the most triple threat matches on any WWE show in history.

It also meant that it was the first year that a brand other than Raw or SmackDown could actually win the show. Interestingly, NXT didn't just win, but they completely dominated, since Raw and SmackDown didn't manage to amass their point haul combined.

The likes of Shayna Baszler, The NXT Women's Team, Roderick Strong and Lio Rush all won their respective matches to give NXT the four-point win since Raw and SmackDown only managed one point and two points respectively.

Why was NXT so dominant on this year's show? Here are five potential reasons for the haul for Triple H's brand.

#5. Raw and SmackDown didn't need the win as much as NXT

Over the years, Raw and SmackDown have been able to battle it out on the Survivor Series stage, but this year they needed to band together on many occasions to overcome the threat that was unleashed by NXT.

The brand is still seen as developmental and over the past few weeks they have taken the fight to both Raw and SmackDown and after throwing down so hard on the main roster, they knew that they had to back it up.

NXT invaded SmackDown on Friday night with a jeep alongside Shawn Michaels and Triple H and it was reminiscent of DX back in 1998, so there had to be some impressive follow up at Survivor Series after the battle lines that had been drawn in recent weeks.

#4. The WWE Universe was hot on NXT after War Games

Any WWE fan that tuned into last night's Takeover: War Games show would know that NXT brought the fight to Chicago and definitely set the bar ahead of tonight's show. Not only were NXT the winners of the brand war tonight at Survivor Series, but Adam Cole and Pete Dunne stole the show when they collided for the NXT Championship.

There were many stars who competed at Takeover: Games that pulled double duty since they competed at War Games and Survivor Series including Rhea Ripley, Bianca Belair, Candice LeRae, Io Shirai, Pete Dunne, Adam Cole, Tommaso Ciampa, Matt Riddle, Keith Lee, Dominik Dijakovic and Shayna Baszler.

The crowd that were in Chicago for Survivor Series had also been in attendance for last night's War Games show. Since it was a show that defied logic on a number of occasions, it makes sense that WWE would want to play to that crowd and continue to put over the NXT stars because they were able to garner a reaction from the same set of fans last night.

#3. NXT is going to continue being part of the main roster

Shayna Baszler confirmed NXT's win when she was able to force Bayley to tap out
Shayna Baszler confirmed NXT's win when she was able to force Bayley to tap out

Shayna Baszler main evented her first pay-per-view on the main roster as part of Survivor Series but whilst The Queen of Spades was celebrating her win after she forced Bayley to tap, Becky Lynch attacked her from behind to remind her that she was still The Man and that she hadn't been pinned.

This attack was obviously to set up a match that would involve both Ronda Rousey and Shayna Baszler in the future, which means that the NXT stars could be part of the main roster, so the company needed to put them over.

Baszler could be set to lose her NXT Women's Championship to Rhea Ripley in the coming months, which means that she would have nothing tying her to NXT and if this was a shop window for the main roster, then Baszler could potentially be promoted following the show she put on in the main event.

When Rousey returns to WWE, it's likely that she will need Baszler and the other two Horsewomen to help her on the main roster and her win tonight has shown that she is quite a force to be reckoned with.

#2. The future is now!

NXT is no longer WWE's Network show that is being used as a launchpad for the main roster. NXT stars are no longer hiding in the shadows or hoping that they will be noticed by the main roster and promoted if they are good enough.

Times have now changed, ever since September NXT has been streaming live on a Wednesday night on the USA Network and it's proved that it's still the phenomenon that it once was.

Despite this, NXT is still seen as the developmental brand and this was the company's way of showing that this isn't the case. NXT stars now longer want to be on the main roster, they consider NXT to be the main roster and the work that they are doing at Full Sail University needs to be seen to be believed.

Survivor Series was Triple H's chance to show what NXT can do and it was for the main roster to put over the talent that will be on the main roster in years to come. NXT deserved the win, they have dominated the buildup and they more than followed through on their threats tonight.

#1. NXT needs the ratings following Survivor Series

NXT has been streaming live on the USA Network since September but the only time the company was able to defeat AEW in the ratings was when the main roster invaded the show this past week.

This proves that many wrestling fans will only tune into the show if big names are part of it, which is something that WWE can't do when the brand split is put back into effect moving forward.

Tonight was the night where NXT introduced themselves to the main roster crowd and hoped that it was enough to bring faces to their product on Wednesday night. The ratings are there if they have managed to boost them as part of an invasion storyline so they could be pointed towards NXT once again.

Raw is already seen as WWE's flagship show and SmackDown has been dominating the ratings since its move over to FOX so tonight was all about ensuring that the WWE Universe knew that NXT was the future, the future is now and it's streaming every week live on a Wednesday night.
