WWE news and notes: 9th September, 2013

Cody Rhodes

  • Former WWE personality Jonathan “The Coach” Coachman, who now works as a commentator for ESPN, recently spoke to ESPN Magazine about current WWE star Darren Young coming out of the closet. Coachman describes the situation as no big deal, and mentions that Pat Patterson was one of Vince McMahon’s right-hand men for years and came out as gay roughly four decades ago.
  • Current WWE stars Daniel Bryan, Rob Van Dam, WWE Divas Champion AJ Lee and Kaitlyn have all been confirmed for Ringside Fest in New York City, NY on October 26th.
  • Cody Rhodes will be marrying his fiancee’ Brandi Reed on September 26th. His impending wedding is the reason for his “firing” from WWE last Monday night on RAW, and the angle was done specifically to give him time off to get married and have a honeymoon. Rhodes will be back on TV in a couple months, and is expected to be a big part of the current storyline involving Triple H and Randy Orton.
  • WWE had planned an upcoming tour of Spain, however, that tour has been canceled. One of the main reasons was due to John Cena being out with an injury, as he is a big draw in the country. However, another major factor was the network that would have aired the RAW and Smackdown tapings that would have taken place was shut down, meaning that the tapings would not have been shown in the country.
  • In addition to the return of “The Cutting Edge” featuring WWE Hall of Famer Adam “Edge” Copeland, former US, Intercontinental and Tag Team Champion Santino Marella returned to action on RAW earlier tonight. Marella has been out of action since April of this year, nursing some injuries. Tonight was something of a hometown return for Marella as the show took place in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Marella is from Mississauga, Ontario, which is a suburb of Toronto. In his time away from WWE, Marella has also been at work on his brand-new wrestling and MMA school, the Battle Arts Academy, which Jerry Lawler and Michael Cole mentioned on the broadcast.
  • Two new matches were announced for Night of Champions earlier on RAW. The first will be a Tag Team Turmoil Match, which is a match we have not seen in a very long time. It’s essentially a gauntlet match with teams instead of singles competitors, and the last team standing wins. The teams involved will be two members of 3MB, the Real Americans, the Usos, the Prime-Time Players and Tons of Funk. The winners will be the new #1 contenders to the WWE Tag Team Championship. That leads to the second match announced, as the winners of the Turmoil match will face current champions Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins later in the night for the belts.
  • Speaking of tag teams, the current plan for the impending debut of Los Matadores is for them to feud with the Real Americans.
