#10 Andrea Barzagli

Overall rating: 84

At 33, Barzagli leads a list of three defenders with an overall rating of 84 (with Dani Alves and Javier Mascherano being the other two). Barzagli shows great levels of concentration in all his games, tries to win the ball early and is very confident in passing th ball.

He might sometimes be not that good when it comes to aerial duels.

#9 Mats Hummels

Overall rating: 85

A tall and strong defender with a calm head on his shoulders, Hummels has raised his game over the past few seasons.

At 25, he will prove to be an excellent buy as he will only grow further in Career mode.

One disadvantage is that he can sometimes be on the slower side.

#8 Ashley Cole

Overall rating: 85

As a left-back Cole perfectly balances the offensive and defensive sides of his game.

A good header of the ball, Cole is very quick down the left, reads the game well and times his tackles to perfection. His deadly crosses provide a very viable attacking option.

All these attributes have seen Cole make the left-back position for England his own for over a decade.

#7 Sergio Ramos

Overall rating: 86

Ramos is the youngest European to win 100 caps at the international level. As a defender, he’s brave and aggressive, but remarkably technically composed.

His heading ability has proven to be equally vital while defending or attacking set-pieces.

#6 Vincent Kompany

Overall rating : 86

In FIFA 14, Kompany is the 2nd highest rated Premier League defender. Kompany is a colossus at the back for the Sky Blues. He is considered one of the best in the world because of his no-nonsense defending, perfectly timed tackles and his leadership skills.

He also provides an attacking threat from set-pieces..

#5 Gerard Pique

Overall rating : 86

Pique has won almost everything with Barcelona and is still only 27 years old.

With the attacking philosophy of Barcelona, they are sometimes left unprotected at the back, but Pique has protected the goal with many last ditch tackles and relies on his positioning to stop any counter attacks.

He falls into the category of footballing defenders and is technically very good with the ball and his passes from the back start-off many attacks.

#4 Giorgio Chiellini

Overall rating: 86

A typical old-fashioned defender, Chiellini is unbeatable in the air and his long balls from the back are quite impressive. He has been a stalwart at the back for Juventus, starring in their three consecutive titles.

He was pivotal to Italy’s run to the Uefa Euro 2012 finals and 3rd place finish in the Confederations Cup last year.

#3 Nemanja Vidic

Overall rating : 87

He might have fallen behind this season, but he is still considered as one of the finest defenders in FIFA 14. The main reasons for this are his physical strength, tackling ability and his ability to dominate aerial duels.

One advantage is that you might have a chance to sign him up on a free in Career mode as his contract expires in June 2014.

#2 Thiago Silva

Overall rating – 87

The Brazilan captain comes a close 2nd .He is a complete defender who is calm and composed with the ball at his feet, strong in the air and possesses excellent positioning sense.

He would be an expensive but great buy in Career mode.

His growth since leading Germany at the Fifa World Cup 2010 has been immense. His workrate, passing ability and positional sense are impeccable. The level of consistency in his performances over the last few years has been incredible.
