WrestleMania Countdown: 5 biggest Upsets in Pay-per-view's history

Getting shocked is probably the best part about sitting through a pay-per-view like WrestleMania. WWE usually provides us with a roller coaster ride on their WrestleMania outings and this has resulted in a lot of memorable moments throughout the history. As the company will be preparing their 31st annual WrestleMania, dont be surprised if they decide to throw in one or two upsets into the mix.But before we head into Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California for the latest edition of WrestleMania it would only be fitting to have a blast from the past. So here is a rundown on some of the biggest upsets in WrestleManias rich and prestigious history.

#5 Hulk Hogan defeats Andre the Giant (WrestleMania III)

A record crowd at WrestleMania III witnessed history being made when the immovable object met with the unstoppable force. It was billed as one of the biggest main events in sports entertainment fork lore and lived up to the expectations without failures as well.

According to the story, Andre the Giant had an undefeated streak that spanned more than a decade and Hogan was projected as someone who could put an end to the saga. Before the match, Hogan promised that he would slam Andre but no one digested the claim since Andre was… well, big.

However, Hogan lived up to his promise and slammed Andre in front of the record attendance and went on to complete a big upset.

#4 18 Seconds of Shame (WrestleMania 28)

Daniel Bryan and Sheamus are two superstars who have a rich history and chemistry. They could produce a solid match on the go and when WWE booked the duo for a World Heavyweight championship match at WrestleMania, everyone expected it to be solid outing but that was not the case.

Bryan went into the match as the champion and started off with a lucky kiss from AJ Lee. He turned around, got kicked in the face by Sheamus, one, two, three and the match was over in not time. Bryan lost his title in the most embarrassing way possible and the fans, who wanted to see a good match between the two, were sent home asking for refunds.

#3 Rey Mysterio wins World Heavyweight Championship (WrestleMania 22)

Rey Mysterio is known to be the ultimate underdog in the WWE. One of the reasons for this tag is this match and the win. After a historic win in the Royal Rumble, Rey went into the WrestleMania main event to challenge for the World heavyweight championship against Randy Orton and Kurt Angle.

Now, though Rey had a good push going on due to the real life death of Eddie Guerrero, not everyone expected him to win the championship because it was the ‘heavyweight’ championship, get it?

Those prejudices were sent packing in the wind when Rey got the win and the championship to his name. It was a cheap move from the company to bank in on Eddie’s death but it was an upset nevertheless.

#2 The Miz defeats John Cena (WrestleMania XXVII)

Anyone who follows WWE vaguely would know how bad the Miz is when it comes to being a wrestler. And the same anyone would know how screwed up John Cena is at certain times. Putting these two in a WrestleMania main event was a disastrous combination but no one expected Cena to put Miz over.

Despite all the shortcomings that Cena has, he is one of the top draws in WWE and rarely loses to inferior (yes Miz is inferior to Cena) opponents when it comes to WrestleMania. Cenas loss was due to interference from Rock but then again, the record books of WrestleMania main event now read, Cena 0 Miz 1. Miz could not catapult his career even with such a big win and the reason need not be said again.

#1 Brock Lesnar ends Undertakers streak (WrestleMania XXX)

You saw it coming didn’t you? Brock Lesnar being the one in twenty one and one is arguable ‘the’ biggest upset in WrestleMania history. Before it all began, everyone had a conclusion that this will end up just like all the previous twenty one outings in favor of the Phenom.

This belief was there all the way throughout the match until the referee counted three. The spine-chilling silence is something which still haunts many WWE fans and they were swept away in disbelief at what they just witnessed.

The two decade long legendary streak came to an end just like that. The match had a lot of historic significance but it will be remembered for being the biggest upset in WrestleMania’s history.
