5 matches that went on too long at Wrestlemania

Wrestlemania may as well be the show of shows with iconic matches and classic moments, but even a show of that stature has its bad days. Arguably, there as may as well be more not so memorable moments than memorable moments. The biggest achievement of this PPV is the fact that the memorable moments are that much more special to give the PPV a towering appeal. There is no stage like that of Wrestlemania for the wrestlers but yet there are moments when you just have to sit back and wonder what the heck is happening in front of you given the mortifying circumstances. Here are 5 matches that went on too long at Wrestlemania:

#5 Miz vs John Cena

This match at Wrestlemania 27 was Miz’s one proclamation of glory for a long time. He main-evented Wrestlemaia -something that many wrestlers dream to do. He’ll always have this. But the build up to this match was not about Miz at all. It was more of a foundation to build the ‘Once In A Lifetime’ match between Rock and Cena. Rock was the Host of Wrestlemania 27 and we all knew he was going to make his presence felt one way or the other. A week before the PPV, Cena had delivered an AA to The Rock.

So, this is what happened at Wrestlemania- Cena and Miz, both get counted out, Rock comes out to shove the Anonymous Raw GM’s orders in a bin and then restarted the match, delivered a Rock Bottom to Cena as comeuppance. Cena lost the match.

All of that was quite a long story which could have been short.

#4 Brock Lesnar Vs Goldberg

The only saving moment of this match was the way it ended.

Brock Lesnar and Goldberg are two of the biggest names in wrestling lore, but both of them were set to leave the company after this match at Wrestlemania XX. They knew it and the world knew it. There was no nostalgia in the air. There was pure resentment in the air as the fans gave a resounding ‘You sold out’ chant towards Lesnar. It was a major relief that this match ended after 13 minutes.

The ending was a sendoff many fans were thankful off. Stone Cold, the special guest referee, delivered a Stunner to both Goldberg and Lesnar.

#3 Undertaker vs Giant Gonzales

Not many giants can end up having a good to great match. Watching these two wrestle was heavy on anyone’s eye. Undertaker has had other bad matches in 22 year old Wrestlemania story. His streak is marked with some forgettable moments and one major forgettable moment, but hard to forget because of how bad it was, was this match against Giant Gonsales.

One would think that the WWE will learn from this incident and not let giants go against each other expect a classic out of them. But since we have Kane vs Khali and the likes in Wrestlemania’s rich history, we can conclude that some old habits die hard.

#2 Bret Hart Vs Vince McMahon

Here’s a thing - Vince Mcmahon is not a great in-ring performer but he almost always delivers in matches. Why? Because sometimes his opponents are so good they’ll carry the match and lend Mcmahon some major good support. That’s why his matches against CM Punk on Raw or HBK at Wrestlemania have been decent. But put someone like Bret Hart who’s brilliant career was marred by major health issues.we knoew McMahon was the one lending support. That was a recipe for disaster, though all the story elements were there. This was Hart taking payback for The Montreal Screwjob.

This was awkward.

#1 Michael Cole VS Jerry \'The King\' Lawler

Why oh Why did this match ever make it to Wrestlemania? The Colemine heel character was just plain annoying. Thank goodness, he’s not playing that gimmick anymore. This match had no meaning and even if it id, nobody really cared. And most of pro-wrestling’s job is to make the audience care or get the desired reaction. And they got 13 minutes to do this. This.

Lawler lost to Cole. Yes, that happened.

Again, the saving grace of this match and the only element to care about was the stipulation of a special guest referee. Stone Cold Steve Austin was back on the same Wrestlemania as the one Rock decided to host.
