WWE Battleground 2014: 5 things that WWE did wrong at the pay-per-view

Fans went into Battleground with a lot of expectations as it was the companys last big stop before SummerSlam. Things didnt turn out as they planned and a majority was left wondering why they were excited about the pay-per-view in the first place. To be frank, it had a match card that couldve produced magic if all the right chords were pulled but like always, the WWE creative team showed that five years olds could book a better show if given the right guidance. The internet is buzzing about that fact that fans deserved better heading to SummerSlam and they have all the reasons to criticize as well. So here is a look at some of the booking decisions that has left the fans questioning WWEs current product.

#5 After match attack from Rusev

One of the surprise matches that looked solid in the end was the one between Rusev and Jack Swagger. Swagger was finally having some great spotlight after a long interval and he made full use of it.

Rusev meanwhile was pushed to more boundaries compared to his performance in Money in the Bank and was projected as a mere mortal than the monster he was build up to be. The ending also gave Swagger a chance to have a rematch in the future as he was well protected.

However, the post-match antics of Rusev just took away all the efforts that WWE put into the booking. Swagger was made to look weak once again with Rusev being the monster in the post- match attack.

Though it opens up the possibility of a rematch, WWE should’ve protected Swagger all the way to the end if they wanted to have a match at SummerSlam.

#4 Usos win again

The situation with the Tag team division is something that has been stressed over and over again. Usos has run their course as champions the WWE needed to take the title away from Usos at Money in the Bank itself.

When that didn’t happen, all the eyes were rooted to Battleground as it seemed like the last chance of Wyatt Family to avoid slipping away from relevance. Another defeat was sure to make Wyatts look weak and WWE did just that at the pay-per-view.

Usos are once again left with no credible opponent for the next pay-per-view as Erick Rowan and Luke Harper getting a third chance would make no sense whatsoever.

If the company has a backup plan in form a new team, this would be a good decision but the limitations in the division underline WWE’s failure in managing the tag teams.

#3 Cesaro getting buried

When the company was letting Cesaro lose many matches heading into Battleground, everyone thought that he was going to get a big moment at the pay-per-view and win the Intercontinental title.

This didn’t happen and without Paul Heyman by his side, Cesaro is looking like a duck stuck in the desert. Cesaro had his moments here and there in the Battle royal but it was a performance that he used to give back in his Real American days.

The main event push that Cesaro had some time ago is nowhere to be seen and when Brock Lesnar makes his return, situation is only going to be worse for the Swiss Superman.

Heading to SummerSlam, this is a big blow for Cesaro and his fans as they were expecting him to be involved in a big angle rather than fighting with Kofi Kingston.

#2 The whole Bray Wyatt Chris Jericho match

When Jericho returned after a one year hiatus, the fans thought that he would be in for a big SummerSlam match after a great buildup. Instead, Jericho was seen wrestling in Raw and SmackDown while he was running a program with Wyatt.

The big angle was expected to run all the way to SummerSlam, but there also WWE surprised us by booking Wyatt and Jericho for Battleground. This was supposed to be the curtain raiser for a big match between the two after one month.

Most of the fans are still wondering who to blame in making the match slow and stale as both the creative and the wrestlers are equally guilty. After seeing such a bad match between the two, the fans will have a tough time investing in the feud when it comes to the next stage.

#1 No match between Ambrose and Rollins

The prospect of Dean Ambrose and Seth Rollins going all guns blazing was simply the best part about the Battleground buildup. Though the fans were expecting the authority being involved, no one saw that the entire match would be called off.

It was a great angle to be precise, but for the fans that spent their well-earned money to see these two daredevils battle it out, it was more than disappointing.

This is sure to stretch the angle all the way to SummerSlam where these two will have a big stage to settle the score;

However, they won’t have a chance to recover if they screw up. Calling off the most anticipated match from the card was something WWE should’ve avoided doing right before they were heading into such an important phase of the year.
