On May 17, 2024, SEVENTEEN released the official music video for Spell, performed by the band's performance sub-unit. The latest single hails from the K-pop group's latest comeback release 17 IS RIGHT HERE, which was released on April 29, 2024. The album has 33 tracks, among which four are new songs: LALALI, Cheers To Youth, Spell, and the title track MAESTRO.

This concept is shown in the latest Spell music video, which also showcases SEVENTEEN's characteristic of expressing intense emotions without resorting to prophecies or tell-tales. Additionally, the lyrics demonstrate the group's capacity to communicate love for their beloved without using words.

For the unversed, the 13-piece K-pop band's performance sub-unit comprises Hoshi, Dino, Minghao aka The8, and Jun.

SEVENTEEN's Spell derives inspiration from tarots in the cinematically appealing music video

The members are shown in the new visual, switching between performance moments where they dance to a tune by the beach with a group of dancers in costumes meant to represent various tarot cards. The Amapiano genre is represented by the song's hypnotic synth tones and upbeat drumbeat rhythms.

The four members of the sub-unit represented one card each from the tarot deck. The8 symbolizes the heart, Hoshi the wings, Dino stands for the arrow, and Jun is the Apollo. The latest SEVENTEEN music video took inspiration from tarot cards and astrology as a concept, and laced it with captivating cinematography, visuals, outfits, and set designs.

The8's heart card is often seen as "The Ace of Cups" or "The Cupid" in tarot decks. It represents feelings, relationships, family, and home. Additionally, it can signify a mutually loving and balanced soulmate pair, the beginning of a new relationship of love and emotional experiences. It may also represent a profound connection or attraction between two individuals. This could be the group's way of showcasing their equation with their fans and a hint of a new chapter.

Hoshi as the wings or "The Temperance" card was the sole representation of the temperance card and may alternatively stand for Michael the Archangel, Ganymede, or the goddess Iris. Technically, the common symbolism of temperance— one of the cardinal virtues— has a winged angel with typically a feminine or androgynous figure and is shown diluting water with wine. Hence, Hoshi could be seen surrounded by the water element in the music video.

Dino is symbolized as "The Arrow" in the new music video for Spell. The tarot card with arrows might symbolize different things to different people. Another name for this card is "The Chariot, " which stands for triumph, control, and conquering adversity with tenacity and resolve. Some decks refer to it as "The Empress," a symbol of initiative, activity, and fruitfulness.

The artist could have used this as a metaphor to underscore SEVENTEEN's rise to success throughout the decade. Furthermore, the group won their first Daesang award in the 2023 Mnet Asian Music Awards for Best Album where they mentioned their struggles during their acceptance speech.

Meanwhile, Jun represents "The Apollo" card which is often shown as a young man, "The Magician" is believed to represent Apollo, the Greek Sun God. A youthful person represents spreading light to darkness and confronting concerns that have been avoided. It is also the first trump card in a tarot deck.

This could be another symbolism that strongly highlights the group's popular variety shows such as Going SEVENTEEN, NANA TOUR, and more which are loved by viewers for their fun and humor element.

In other news, SEVENTEEN's FOLLOW AGAIN tour movie will hit the cinemas in August 2024. Meanwhile, the group released an all-new Going SEVENTEEN episode on their official YouTube channel, bringing back its "Going Rangers" segment.
