What's the story?

As reported by Still Real To Us, WWE Hall of Famer Michael Hayes was supposedly the man who invented the House of Horrors Match stipulation many years ago. The news was revealed on a recent episode of Edge And Christian's Pod Of Awesomeness.

In case you didn't know...

The House of Horrors bout has been booked in for WWE Payback ever since Bray Wyatt challenged Randy Orton to the match on the SmackDown Live after WrestleMania. Many people have been speculating as to what this kind of stipulation will entail, with some believing that it will be similar to some of the matches The Broken Hardys had in TNA.

The heart of the matter

The following are quotes from the aforementioned podcast.

“Do you remember Michael [Hayes] came up with this idea, and full credit he came up with this: The House Of Horrors Match?” Edge asked Christian.

Christian replied with an impression of Michael PS Hayes saying:

“Guys I got an ideal, he couldn’t say idea, it was ideal. And he was like, ‘what about The Brood against The Hardys?’ And he came up with this concept for this House Of Horrors Match where basically we would do the match inside of like a funhouse-type thing with like two-way mirrors and different rooms and things and we would fight all the way — I can’t remember how the match would end, but I remember the concept and being like ‘woah, that’s pretty crazy but kinda cool.'”

Edge stated that it was strange. He added:

“ Shoot it like a movie with trap doors and secret passageways and all of these things. Kinda I guess, a predecessor to — like Matt must’ve remembered that and took that and ran with it with the, you know, “Delete, Delete” idea and everything like that. But I remember Michael coming up with it and the four of us were kinda like, ‘woah that’s crazy but there’s a possibility.’ And then it was about figuring out how Jeff could do a Whisper In The Wind off a staircase and just weird things like that. But I remember the multiple camera angles.”

What's next?

It's only a matter of time until we finally get the answers we've been searching for regarding this match, with Wyatt set to go one on one with Orton in less than two weeks time. Given that this information regarding Hayes comes from Edge & Christian it seems pretty believable, and it shows what kind of an influence he has always had within the wrestling business.

Author's take

Hayes doesn't get enough credit for the things he's done for WWE over the years, and it'd be great to see some kind of concept art for this match if it did indeed exist. We don't think that Matt Hardy would've taken his entire gimmick from this, but it's interesting to consider the possibility that he borrowed snippets here and there from the House of Horrors idea.
