Following the release of the series’ 80th chapter last month, the Boruto manga series began a 4-month hiatus in which no issues for the series would be released. This comes at an unfortunate but sensible time in the manga, which saw Boruto and Kawaki essentially change places in the series’ world.

While fans are upset to see the manga go on hiatus after such an exciting development, the break in production is hardly unexpected or unjustified in light of this latest narrative twist. In fact, it’s almost encouraging to see the team of authors Masashi Kishimoto and Ukyo Kodachi, as well as illustrator Mikio Ikemoto, likely taking their time in planning the series’ next steps.

Unfortunately, this does mean that the content wellspring for the Boruto manga series will be fairly dry over the next few months. Thankfully, an exciting leak today has seemingly revealed what the cover for volume 20 will be, giving fans at least something to look forward to.

The latest

The alleged leak of the Boruto volume 20 cover page was posted to Twitter by apparent series fan @Abdul_S17 (Abdul). Per his tweet, the volume is set to be officially released in Japan on June 2, 2023. Unfortunately, international fans likely won’t see the volume translated and released overseas until very late 2023, at the absolute earliest.

Per the leak, the cover features the titular character and Kawaki fighting each other in the air, both with their respective Otsutsuki Karma seemingly activated. The series’ eponymous protagonist is seemingly being portrayed as the underdog given the relative way in which the two are positioned with respect to one another. This also makes sense considering the manga’s latest developments.

In chapter 80, fans saw Kawaki essentially cause the two to switch lives with some help from Eida and her Omnipotence ability. Essentially, Eida was able to make the world believe that Kawaki was Naruto’s son and that Boruto was the adopted outsider, thanks to how strongly Kawaki wished for this change in his life.

While Sarada Uchiha was able to remember how the world truly is and the two’s respective roles, most everyone else, including Sasuke Uchiha, fell prey to Eida’s ability. While Sarada was thankfully able to convince Sasuke to help the true son of his best friend, Sasuke still views him as an outsider who killed Naruto, as Kawaki claimed after the switch occurred.

Fans are expecting the manga to have some sort of a time-skip upon its return, especially considering the way in which the latest chapter ended. While fans won’t find out the answer to this for quite some time, the franchise is at least giving them some informational crumbs to look forward to in the meantime.
