Thursday, November 28, 2024 saw the You and Idol Precure anime officially announced by Toei Animation, serving as the 22nd main entry in the company’s larger Precure franchise. Unfortunately, no other information regarding the upcoming project was revealed alongside this initial announcement aside from an image of the anime’s logo.
However, the You and Idol Precure anime does have an official website already up, which fans can expect to be the primary means of sharing new information on the upcoming series. Information should also be shared via parent company Toei Animation’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, which also announced this initial batch of news for the series.
You and Idol Precure anime set to mark 22nd mainline entry in larger franchise
As mentioned above, the upcoming You and Idol Precure anime series will serve as the 22nd mainline anime entry in the larger Precure franchise. The news of its announcement comes as the 21st Precure television anime series, Wonderful Precure!, is still airing weekly on Japanese television. Crunchyroll is internationally streaming the anime weekly with English subtitles as it airs in Japan, and also has several other entries in the franchise, including the original series.
In addition to the above announcement news, it was also confirmed that Maho Tsukai Precure!!: MIRAI DAYS will premiere on Saturday, January 11, 2024 in Japan. The series is a direct sequel to the Witchy Pretty Cure! anime series, and will premiere in the “Animazing!!!” programming block on ABC TV, TV Asahi, and several other affiliate stations. The original series first aired from 2016 to 2017 for a total of 50 episodes, and was the 11th entry in the franchise.
While the television You and Idol Precure anime series will serve as the latest entry in the franchise, it has plenty of significant history. The iconic magical girl anime franchise first began with the original series in 2004, created by Izumi Todo and produced by ABC Television, ABC Animation, ADK Emotions, and Toei Animation. Each series revolved around a different group of magical girls known as Pretty Cures who fight evil forces.
Although incredibly popular in Japan, there hasn’t been much of a demand for localization of the series, with only three having received English adaptations as of this article’s writing. These three are Futari wa Pretty Cure dubbed by Ocean Productions, and Smile PreCure! and DokiDoki! PreCure dubbed by Saban Brands. The latter two productions were released on Netflix internationally under the respective names Glitter Force and Glitter Force Doki Doki.
In addition to the mainline television anime franchise, the franchise has also expanded into dolls, bracelets, video games, figuarts, theatrical presentations, and more. Without a doubt, the Precure franchise is one of the most successful in Japanese anime.
