Corbin Burnes was in the middle of a good season with his new team, the Arizona Diamondbacks, before his devastating injury on Friday. Burnes, who had signed a six-year, $210 million deal in the offseason, has a 2.66 ERA and 63 strikeouts in 64.1 innings and 11 starts.

The right-hander will undergo Tommy John surgery, as reported by ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

Given that Corbin Burnes was expected to anchor Arizona's rotation deep into October, the Diamondbacks' front office will have to scratch its head to replace Burnes. Here are four potential options the Diamondbacks could turn to following Burnes’ season-ending injury:

Four potential Corbin Burnes replacements following his injury

#1 Dylan Cease

Following Corbin Burnes' injury, the Diamondbacks will have to turn to the trade market. Cease is in his final year of team control and will become a free agent in the offseason.

While he may not be as good as Burnes, the Padres could make him available on the market, and if the Diamondbacks want, they could get his half-year rental for cheap. In 2025, Cease is 1-5 and holds a 4.72 ERA.

#2 Michael Lorenzen

Lorenzen isn't having a good year (5.12 ERA in 65.0 innings), so Kansas State might not hang on to him this trade deadline.

He's one and a half season removed from testing free agency, and if the Diamondbacks believe in the potential of Lorenzen, checking for a potential trade won't be a bad idea at all.

#3 Andrew Heaney

Anyone from the Pittsburgh Pirates apart from Paul Skenes should be available to other teams through trade. Heaney is having a good season, becoming an excellent choice to replace Burnes. His 3.39 ERA over 66.1 innings should add value, so getting him through trade could be tough.

The likes of the Dodgers and the Yankees, who are also hit with injuries to starting rotation members, might compete with Arizona on this front.

#4 Michael King

Another member of the Padres appearing on this list is Michael King. While he won't become a free agent until the end of the 2026 season, his name has come up in trade rumors.

While he's dealing with right shoulder inflammation, his return is nearing. Before getting injured, King had posted a 2.59 ERA and 64 strikeouts in 55.2 innings. He holds great value, so the Diamondbacks will have to put a long haul out to get him.
