Free agent third baseman Alex Bregman remains a hot commodity on the market, with several teams reportedly negotiating with his agent Scott Boras this offseason. While the two-time World Series champion wants a contract worth $200 million, teams haven't been willing to offer him that much.
Former Mets GM Steve Phillips made a compelling case for why Bregman would be the perfect signing for the Detroit Tigers. On MLB Network, Phillips compared Bregman to Jason Werth’s pivotal role with the Washington Nationals, calling the move a “personality signing” that could define the team’s direction.
“I look at the Tigers and think if you believe that you're now ready to make the move to sign a guy like this, then sign him,” Phillips said.

“Let him be your Jason Werth, like what Jason Werth was a number of years ago to the Washington Nationals. They overpaid him a bit, but they needed a guy to be the leader of the transition. Let Bregman be that guy. Give him a little bit more money to get him to Detroit, but get him to Detroit."
Phillips believes that Bregman would bring more than just his on-field talent to the Tigers.
"This is a personality signing for the Tigers," Phillips added. "If you get Bregman, it's a statement of who you are and where you're going — with a winning player, with a manager who knows the winning player, who's going to start to take all the young guys and pull them together. Pay the extra money to get it done if you're Detroit."
Nolan Arenado's latest move could hurt Alex Bregman's free agency

St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado's potential trade interest could be a thong for Alex Bregman's contract talks with the Boston Red Sox.
Arenado, who has a full no-trade clause, had blocked a potential deal between the Cardinals and the Astros that involved him departing. However, according to John Denton of MLB.com, Arenado is reportedly open to waiving his clause if it means the Cardinals trade him to the Red Sox.
That directly clashes with Alex Bregman's free agency, though, as the Red Sox are among the teams interested in the third baseman. If they sign Arenado, they won't likely sign Bregman, who has a similar talent but is younger.
