MLB radio host claims Hal Steinbrenner pales in comparison to his Yankees-obsessed father: "The difference is, his pops was possessed"

Hal Steinbrenner has come under fire

The New York Yankees of today are not the Bronx Bombers of old. Hal Steinbrenner, the current owner, doesn't operate in the same way that his father, George, did. Steinbrenner is a bit more frugal, if such a thing can be said about the owner of the team with the second-highest payroll in baseball.

Steinbrenner runs the team differently and Yankees fans haven't become accustomed to that yet. Brandon Tierney, an MLB analyst, believes it's time to come to grips with reality.

He said via Audacy:

“We can scream about this forever…it will be easier for your health and your sanity the quicker you realize that we want it more than Hal. We can sit here and say ‘Why is Brian Cashman getting another extension, why is this guy still here, why isn’t he eating this contract?’ the bottom line is, and you have to accept it: Yankee fans are more possessed and driven for the Yankees to win than the owner.”

He continued:

“I’m not asking for that. What we are asking for…Hal is not willing to make mistakes go away by buying people out. I know [Aaron] Hicks had a good night but he’s been terrible, [Josh] Donaldson is another one. Giancarlo Stanton in four years, we’ll be asking, ‘why is he still here?’ Hal just accepts it. he will never change in that regard. He does a lot for the Yankees, don’t get me wrong. He spends a lot of money. The difference is, his pops was possessed, he is not. Deal with it.”

From Tierney's perspective, Hal Steinbrenner isn't a bad owner. He spends money on the team, which is more than some owners can say. He threw the bank at Aaron Judge, Carlos Rodon and Gerrit Cole, three of the best at their respective jobs in all of baseball.

Hal Steinbrenner not bad, just not the best according to MLB insider

Tierney believes the criticism for Steinbrenner comes in the form of mistakes. Throwing money at big name players, which the Yankees still do, can backfire. It does, as has been seen with Aaron Hicks, Josh Donaldson and others.

Tierney believes Steinbrenner won't admit defeat on bad moves, thus keeping them around and hurting the team. For the record, Aaron Hicks was DFA'd after these comments.
