What's the rumor?

Over the past few weeks, DeMar DeRozan and LaMarcus Aldridge have been linked with moves away from the San Antonio Spurs following an underwhelming start to the season. The Spurs pulled off an impressive win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night, although they still sit outside the playoff spots with a 7-13 record, and there have been rumors of an impending rebuild.

Nevertheless, Morten Jensen of Forbes believes that Kevin Love could be a trade target for the Spurs if they decide to stick with the current roster:

The San Antonio Spurs, from a pure tactical perspective, would make a lot of sense. If they’re serious about wanting to give DeMar DeRozan a contract extension, they might as well go all-in on established talent, which means sending out their young core.

In case you didn't know...

Love is a five-time All-Star, and he played a key role on a Cleveland Cavaliers team that made four straight trips to the NBA Finals between 2014 and 2018. He signed a new four-year deal following the departure of LeBron James in 2018, although the Cavs have since fallen out of contention, and have started the 19-20 season with a 5-14 record.

Nevertheless, Love has continued to perform well and is currently averaging 17.2 points, 11.1 rebounds, and 2.9 assists in 31.6 minutes per contest

The heart of the matter

The addition of Love alongside DeRozan and Aldridge could be enough to make the Spurs serious contenders in the West, although it is worth noting that all three players are in their 30s.

With plenty of young emerging talent on the roster, the Spurs face a big call on if they want to build for the future or try to compete for the final few years of the Gregg Popovich era - so it will be interesting to see what direction the franchise opts to go into over the next few months.

What's next?

The Spurs will be looking to follow up their huge win over the Clippers when they face the Detroit Pistons on Sunday.
