India and Australia have been the most successful teams at the ICC World Cup

The first ever Cricket World Cup was played in the year 1975 when an ODI innings consisted of 60 overs. West Indies won the first two World Cups while India became the first Asian nation to win the World Cup when it conquered the mighty Windies in the 1983 World Cup final. The next three World Cups saw three new winners as Australia won in 1987, Pakistan achieved the trophy in 1992 while Sri Lanka won the Cup in 1996.

The Australian era commenced in the World Cups since 1999 as the Aussies won three consecutive World Cups and developed an undefeated streak. India became the first team in the history to win the World Cup on its own soil when it ended the Australian dominance in 2011. But, the men in Yellow once again won the World Cup by becoming the second team to win it on their own turf in 2015.

The next World Cup will be played in 2019 in England and Wales and the home team will be the favourites walking into the tournament. However, the English side does not have a good win/loss at the World Cups and have failed to win the World Cup even once. Here are the top five teams with the best win percentage in the ICC World Cups.

#5 West Indies - 58.57 %

West Indies rank second (along with India) when it comes to winning the ICC World Cup as they won the trophy in 1975 and 1979.

But ever since 1983, their performance at the World Cup has deteriorated and they had to play the qualifying round in order to make it to the ICC World Cup 2019. They have won 41 out of the 71 World Cup matches they have played thus far.

#4 New Zealand - 61.53 %

Australia v New Zealand - 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup: Final

New Zealand can be hailed as the underachievers of the ICC World Cup as they looked favourites to win the World Cup in 1992 and 2015. However, some poor performances in the knockout matches led to their defeats in the most important matches.

They have won 48 out of their 79 matches at the World Cup and lost 30 out of them. The Kiwis have played the second most number of World Cup matches (second only to Australia) and have appeared at all the 11 World Cups played from 1975 to 2015.

The Blackcaps will play their 12th World Cup when they take the field in England in June 2019 and the Kiwis would love to win their first ever World Cup in the United Kingdom. Brendon McCullum and Martin Crowe have been the best performers for New Zealand at the World Cup.

#3 India - 62.83 %

India v Sri Lanka - 2011 ICC World Cup Final
India v Sri Lanka - 2011 ICC World Cup Final

India made its debut in the 1975 World Cup and it took eight years for the Indians to win the World Cup when Kapil Dev led his men to the historic title win in 1983. However, the Indians could not repeat their same magic in the next 28 years until MS Dhoni's men won the World Cup in 2011 at Mumbai.

The Indian team had also reached the final of the 2003 World Cup but had lost to Australia by a huge margin. Their worst performance came in the 2007 World Cup when they were knocked out in the group stage by minnows Bangladesh.

India have won 46 out of the 75 World Cup matches, lost 27 out of them along with one no result. The Men in Blue have also played a tied match with England in the ICC World Cup 2011.

#2 South Africa - 65.45%

New Zealand v South Africa: Semi Final - 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup
New Zealand v South Africa: Semi Final - 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup

South Africa have been regarded as the chokers of the ICC World Cup since they have always made it to the knockout round but have failed to qualify for the final even once. Their best finish at the World Cup is their semifinal appearances at the 1992, 1999, 2007 and 2015 World Cups.

The Proteas have all of their four semi-finals as England defeated them in 1992, Australia eliminated them in 1999 and 2007 while New Zealand conquered their challenge in the 2015 World Cup.

The rainbow nation have only lost 18 out of their 55 matches and played two ties whilst winning 35 matches. They have played the most number of tied World Cup matches as they tied a game against Australia in 1999 and versus Sri Lanka in the 2003 World Cup.

#1 Australia - 75.30%

Australia are undoubtedly the best team of the ICC World Cup as they have won 5 out of the 11 editions and are the current champions of the World Cup. They first won the World Cup in 1987, and then built a 12-year undefeated streak to win the 1999, 2003 and 2007 World Cups. The Aussies lost in the quarter-finals stage of the 2011 World Cup but regained their title in 2015.
