In 2013, in a match against Pune Warriors India, Chris Gayle scored the most runs in a T20 innings. The game was held at the Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru. Playing for the Royal Challengers Bangalore, Chris Gayle scored a whopping 175 runs off just 66 deliveries in the 31st match of the 6th edition of the IPL.
Gayle opened the innings alongside the Sri Lankan great, Tillakaratne Dilshan.The boundaries being short at RCB’s home stadium, Gayle took full advantage of it. He hit an astonishing 17 sixes and 13 fours in the whole innings.
Gayle defended the first couple of deliveries of the innings, then started his attack in the second over. With Ishwar Pandey coming to bowl, Gayle hit the first two deliveries of his bowling spell for boundaries.
Then, suddenly, heavy rain started to pour down and the game was put on a hold. After some time, the game was resumed and Chris Gayle hit another three boundaries off Ishwar Pandey’s bowling to finish the second over. It was in the fifth over when Gayle began his six-hitting riot.
With Mitchell Marsh on to the attack, Gayle hit four sixes and one boundary to bring up his fifty off just 17 balls and also score the most runs in an over in the 2013 IPL. After reaching his fifty, Gayle began fiercely pouncing on every ball.
In the seventh over, Gayle hit another couple of sixes and a boundary off Ali Murtaza’s bowling. Then, in the eight over, part-time bowler Aaron Finch was brought into the attack. Instead of getting Chris Gayle’s wicket, he was hit for 28 runs, with 4 sixes and one boundary.
At 96 not out, Gayle brought up his century in style by hitting a 112 meter six off Ashok Dinda’s bowling in the ninth over. He brought up his hundred off just 30 deliveries, the fastest-ever in T20 cricket.
In the next few overs, Gayle’s aggression became milder, hitting only two sixes in the fifteen deliveries that he faced. Then, in the 14th over, Dilshan’s wicket fell and Virat Kohli came on to the field to accompany the Caribbean.
With the left-arm orthodox into the attack, Chris Gayle again began his assault. He hit three sixes and two boundaries off Murtaza’s bowling. Then, in the 17th over, Kohli got run out after hitting a six and AB de Villiers came to bat. De Villiers started his charge from the get-go and Gayle supported him by hitting two boundaries in the 18th over. In the 20th over, Gayle smacked a delivery for six to end his innings on an unbeaten 175 off 66 deliveries.
With the help of Gayle’s sublime performance, RCB put up a humongous score of 263 runs on the board for PWI to chase down. The total proved to be too high for PWI to chase down, scoring only 133 runs off their 20 overs. Chris Gayle was awarded the player of the match for his brilliant batting display, scoring 175 runs at a strike rate of 265.15, and also for his bowling figures of 2 wickets for 5 runs.
