Only 8 teams took part in the inaugural Cricket World Cup played in 1975 and East Africa was among them. East Africa was one of the two teams who were invited to play the Cricket World Cup along with the six full members of the board. The African team joined India, England and New Zealand in Group A.

They played their first World Cup match versus New Zealand and lost the match by 181 runs. Glenn Turner had scored 171 runs in that match. In their second game, India crushed them by 10 wickets while England sent them out of the tourney with a 196-runs defeat.

East Africa finished last in the Group A of the 1975 World Cup. The East African team was suspended by ICC in 1989. The team of East and Central Africa replaced them in the world of cricket.
